Any M273 E550 Owners here?

Anyone with significant experience on the M273 engine? Specifically with the idler gear issue. I put a post in the CLS forum but it will be applicable here too.

The class action lawsuit was settled to reimburse some owners who had the repair. The gear was not hardened and the timing chain rounded off the teeth. Eventually will jump cam timing. Same is true for V6 M272 engines but their associated part is called a balance shaft and a little more complicated. Mercedes changed the gear and shafts to hardened parts but did not recall previous builds.

I only have 30k miles so am in the process of swapping mine at my expense as preventative maintenance. If I wait more parts such as oil pump, water pump, chain, and various others will need to be replaced so doing it now to avoid that.

I have a couple of M273 questions. Specifically with the timing cover and oil pan connection.

okay. What specific questions do you have? Are you DIY?

Since it is the idler sprocket as opposed to the balance shaft I figured an engine in change was easier. The problem that I find is that the oil pan needs to be dropped since it is sealed and bolted to the bottom of the timing cover. Thanks mercedes for that.

Someone provided me the WIS to drop and reinstall the oil pan and it requires an engine lift. Any other option?

Yes tearing into it in my garage. Nothing is too complicated but this part is just annoying.

go to autozone or advance auto or any auto parts store and rent a strut tower engine hoist.

or you could try supporting transmission and see if you have enough room.

I will have time this weekend so will report back. I read of others doing an engine in service, even on a M272 engine, so wondered how they got around this.

Thanks!

me personally i would pull engine. But not everyone has the means to do so.

I however would never do a balance shaft in the car. Idler gear maybe, balance shaft hell nahhhh

good luck!

Everything going well so far. I have a couple of parts on order and am close to pulling timing cover.

I have engine bar from Summit. Still undecided if I will raise engine or drop subframe to get oil pan out.

Where are the mounting points topside to hook a chain and raise it a bit with my engine bar?

1 would be the circle next to the oil filter housing, except i think that's the front cover so that wouldn't suffice. The other two are on each cylinder head where wiring harness is bolted to "eye hooks". use those two. I wouldn't drop subframe unless you are getting an alignment and new subframe bolts. It's going to be a pita getting that front cover back on. The easiest way to re-install that is with the motor turnedupside down but i assume you don't have an engine hoist... Just take you time and make sure you don't nick the head gaskets on re-install and make sure there's no dirt or debris in between the head gaskets because they will leak!

Perfect. Thank you! I will not to drop the subframe based on your feedback. Even with the engine lifted I bet getting to that oil pan is going to be a pain.
I saw a video on the balance shaft replacement and the tech used guides screwed into the block to install the timing cover. That is a great idea as it keeps it aligned. I searched an no one sells them so I will make them from two bolts.
I have no timeframe rush so I am labeling, cleaning, and taking 3x a long as a normal person would. I will be so careful not to nick the headgaskets (those guides will help for sure) and ensure that they are perfectly clean of debris.
thanks!

Is there anything that I should replace while I have this apart? With only 30k miles I don't want to replace perfectly good parts but if something commonly goes and would be easy now I should do it.

timing chain. oil pump. water pump, pretty much all the things you noted earlier. Only reason i'm saying this is because you will have everything torn apart. Might only have 30k miles however seals and bearings/metal age over time. You could replace guide rails and cam adjusters too. But like you said, only 30k.

Maybe if you detach trans from motor the lop wont be such a pita.

Completed this and put updates in the C219 forum. Should have pulled the engine but worked out ok.
