2006 E350 - Need advice

Hello Benz Owners -

I’m looking for some advice on what to do with my 2006 E350. I’m the original owner, 107,000 miles, drove the car like a grandma, parked in garage, kept up on ALL maintenance...you get the picture.

My mechanic stated my car was in great shape and had good bones so I went ahead and sunk 8G on replacing many worn original parts. Honestly I really thought I could drive it for several more years and continue enjoying no monthly car payments for years to come.

Sadly, a few weeks ago my engine light came on and of course my car needs to be smogged/registered during this time...just my luck!

So back to the mechanic we go, this time it’s WAY WORSE, the cam shaft needs replacing on the drivers side, supposedly this was/is an issue with this particular year, make, model and it looks like it’s too late for me to claim anything on this recall.

My problem and question is I can’t register the car, I can’t trade or sell the car. So what should I do with it? Like I said it’s in great shape otherwise with MANY new parts, new tires, great rims, new key, new windshield...etc.

Any advice?

Thank you,
Sad Caligirl

Cam shaft, or balance shaft? Did the mechanic tell you what the codes were that set the check engine light? There is a known issue with the balance shaft that affects engines built in 2006 and part of 2007. That particular issue doesn't affect every engine, but if it does it's an expensive repair due to the labor involved in pulling the engine.

There's also a known problem with the camshaft magnets and sensors that control the variable valve timing system. The magnets/sensors aren't overly expensive nor difficult to replace. If the mechanic reported codes relating to the camshaft, it's worth getting a second opinion to see if it's just the magnets that need replacing.

Please post your VIN so we can see if indeed your vehicle falls into this category.

All the 2006 fall into the balance shaft problem category so you don't really need the VIN, only if it were a 2007 as some early 2007 also had the problem. It's not that common for the camshafts to go though, it's usually the sensors that need to be replaced and they're not that much money. Would need the actual codes though.
