Odometer display Question 2004 E500 Wagon
Hello!
Looking at a 2004 E500 Wagon with a dealer and from the photos, the odometer shows no miles, but shows "----------" in the window.
I have owned many Mercedes over the years and I have never seen this on any odometer display.
Before I call and go see the car, I thought I would ask if anyone has ever seen this on a Mercedes odometer?
Thanks in advance!

I'm wondering what the dealer has to say about that. It could be that odometer is malfunctioning, or the most probable is the instrument cluster does not belong to that car, meaning it was moved from another car and thus odometer needs reprogramming using STAR to work and show actual miles.

After speaking to the 'dealer' on this car, he told me that the battery went dead, and when they connected a new battery the display changed to -------.
He said that I should trust him and that the car only has 64,000 miles. I asked for a CarFax, and he said he don't have one, and if I wanted one, I could order it myself...
Last thing he said before I hung up was that I don't know anything about Mercedes Benz or exotic (?) cars, and they all do that when you change the battery! I'm putting this dealer on my do not call list!!
Sometimes I wonder how these types of operations stay in business!!
Thanks for your help Stuttgarten! I'm going to keep looking.

Stay away, what you're being told of odometer going bad after battery change is nonsense! If anything, don't trust him that car has 64K miles! Mercedes cars look good for many years and he could probably sell it as a 64K-mile car to someone who doesn't do their homework when shopping for such a Mercedes. It's good that you asked first! Good luck with your search!

You can also get Autocheck ($3-$5) and CarFax reports on eBay for $6.50. And yes, if there's no odometer display, there's something wrong with the cluster/electronics. People's batteries here die all the time and that never happens.

2MERKS - I agree 100%!! If a seller can't produce a receipt to prove work was done, I don't believe it!
Thanks for the feedback!
