SBC Question

Does anybody know if MB is going to go back to conventional (mechanical) braking system for W211 in the near future? I heard electro-hydraulic technology (similar technology used in SBC) is a failure. Check this article from germancarfans:

Thanks,

'Oslo' has reported that the European SBC might be withdrawn.

If indeed this is the case then I personally believe it is a backward step.

I cannot recall reading a single European complaint on this excellent system. There have been a number of US members complaining, but in fairness there has been an abundance of US members complementing it.

I have also read countless links to this 'recall'. On the Australian Mercedes-Benz site, it actually mentions the problem. BUT, has anyone with a 211 actually received a written recall letter????

I for one think the 211 is a brilliant motor vehicle with an excellent braking system and am very glad that it is an 04 model with none of the alledged cut backs.

I feel sorry for our US friends who are missing out on far to many 'options' all of which we take as being standard fittings.

Regards
a suffering John

Reporting in the Journal said the same thing. The question is whether it will be dropped with the mid-life revision in 2006 or a full revision in 2009.

was '03 E320 - now - '04 S4
If I had the choice - I'd rather have a normal braking system and some $$$ back.

I think SBC shines on panic and high speed braking. I hate the feel around town. I have an '03. Some '04 owners have reported improved brake feel.

Porsches and Ferraris seem to stop just fine with conventional technologies (but with cool materials like ceramics )

I hated the brakes on an E320 we tested in January. Then I found no problem with 2 different CDIs we road tested. Also thought the handling was better (maybe do to changes to accomodate the 200# heavier engine).

SBC would be replaced by a conventional hydralic ABS system, possibly with an electronic assist. A fairly easy retrofit, I image it will come out with the 2006 mid-life kicker.
