My understanding is that the answer to, "when we we getting bluetooth in the US?" is "not any time soon". The phone solutions seem to me more of same but with newer handsets.

I was talking to my dealer a couple of hours ago and he said that MB will be introducing full Bluetooth integration in MY 2007. That seems like an awfully long time to wait.

they just don't want to give up on the outrageous prices for the integrated phone - even though hardly anyone buys it.

I read an article somewhere last week that talked about some sort of International Bluetooth Steering Group who could not make their mind up about setting some elements of standardisation. On example they gave was about inconsistencies on different vendors approaches to exchanging address lists/telephone numbers.

Maybe MB are holding off until there is some sort of ISO standardisation. I think people would be even more hacked-off if they had it and it didn't work properly than not having it at all. Remember MB have had a lot of poor quality press in recent years, they won't be courting for more!

I guess that is why they have different UHI units for different phone manufacturers then. But, I thought that it was pretty much standardized with many of the so called bluetooth profiles. Such as headset, dial up networking, car, etc.

I do think this is more of a case where MB might have some sort of contract with Motorola that they cannot easily break. And if the 07 date is correct, that is probably when the contract ends. I'm just guessing, but it makes sense.

I have also been talking to a German dealer about picking up some Euro options to retrofit on my US spec E. They say Motorola is going to be replaced with Siemens - don't know which MY though.

The Motorola option has worked well here in the US since the dominant player in the carrier market has been Verizon. Since Siemens does not make CDMA phones, I wonder what their option for the US would be.

Probably GSM. I don't know that much about cell phone technology but from what little I understand, they need GSM (or it's easier with GSM) to go to 3G. That's one of the reasons why AT&T is converting their TDMA network to GSM.

I don't know if the move to Siemens is for only the phone or the entire COMAND. I understand that the most popular phone in German Benz's is Nokia and I would not expect that to change. They may be looking for better systems integration and design from Siemens. From what little I have seen so far of the current COMAND, they have not been well served by Motorola.
