VW TDI Mk4
WTB 2005 -2006 E320 CDI

I know I am crazy for wanting a 2005/2006 Cdi, but I am a diesel guy (current car 2005 VW Golf TDI) I know these W211 have some common pattern failures like the sbc brake system and all the computer modules that are not reliable. I am in Texas, and there’s a few within 5 hour drive that I like. My question is what scanner would be best for me to buy. I don’t mind spending a few hundred dollars on a scanner for a car I don’t own, I rather scan the vehicle and know all the trouble codes before I spend 8,000 on a used car.

My latest is iCarsoft MBII and that thing not only can do whole car health scan, but will run smoothness test, what will tell any problems with cylinders. I no longer own SBC, so don't know if it will read pedal activation count
The only complain about the scanner is that it is slow.
My 320cdi sedan was making the same 32 mpg the 2003 Jetta tdi wagon did if that makes you feel better
Good luck shopping. I have saved searches on MB diesels and they are rare, but seems with last fuel pricing and bad publicity they go dirt cheap.

VW TDI Mk4
Thanks

Great advice, will check out that scanner. My VW TDI always averages 44 mpg. Best highway was 62 mpg. As long as I can get low 30’s mpg with the 320 I will be happy. Just dealing with used car salesmen is a pain, I ask for a complete system scan before I will even look at the car and they never answer.

I absolutely love my '06 E320 CDI, great car! I bought mine used. I've had a couple minor issues but nothing with the SBC...just some poorly executed previous repairs...

I'm averaging 38MPG mixed city/highway and consistently record 42+ MPG on the highway.

VW TDI Mk4
Thanks

That’s why I am looking for a very specific model. I spotted one at a mega used car lot in Houston, which is a 6 hour drive for me. I have already asked the salesman to have the car scanned for all error codes and send to me, but they keep giving me the run around. I like this car because it’s a one owner and the carfax shows transmission service, brake fluid change, consistent oil changes, etc.
Maybe a MBWorld member can go check it out and get a scanner report?

No accurate data but... My Indigo E320CDI 2005 is at 195,000 miles and nothing other than maintenance in last 150,000 miles. My wife says at 200k I get a paint job for the hood (which is a bit sandblasted).

Love it. Fluid changes and filters changes regular. Maintenance does include rear diff seals and alternator brushes. Also I did change the side mirror gaskets as they were flaky. Maybe a battery or two in there somewhere. I'm waiting on the even throttle plates to sieze up but not yet.

GPS and radio may have issues but I never use them and wouldn't know. Go figure. My 1999 Porsche has a cassette player and I don't know if that works either. Don't own a cassette.

One happy owner,
Peter

I went from 2010 VW TDI Jetta Sportwagen to 2008 E320 BlueTec so you are not alone!

MB dealers and Indy MB shops have the proper scanner and can give you the price of a scan up front - wouldn't it make more sense to use their scanner until you actually own the car?
(I spent just over $1000 on a "MB Set SD C4 New Xentry D630 Mercedes Star" scanner)

True

I would prefer to do that, but most of these cars are at used car lots and I wouldn’t be able to gave it scanned. I have seen some scanners that will work on the MB and my VW. I have a laptop that I have Vag-com and Fordscan on for my current vehicles, and was hoping I could just get another cable and software installed for the MB.

Looks like the iCarsoft MB II (mentioned by kajtek1 above) should work on 2006 W211, at least based on the vendor's description:

Yes it does and has lot of advanced functions, but doesn't seem to support my Bluetec module. I have it on the menu, but once I enter, there is not much behind it.
Still does DPF checking with generic software.
Nice feature I discover lately, my 2008 has TPMS with alarm only and will not display pressure on the cluster.
MB II does read actual pressure, so now I can check tires without getting my hands dirty.
