Diagnosing misfire on '05 Merc E500. Runs rough, and code reader says misfire on cylinders 7 & 8. I swapped coils around, still says 7 & 8. I installed 2 new coils just for kicks, same thing. I swapped spark plug wires around, still says 7 & 8. I replaced the spark plugs (2 per cylinder, in 7 & 8), still misfire on 7 & 8.
I used a long socket extension as a stethoscope to listen for ticking. 7 & 8 sound the same as 5 & 6. Should I swap the injectors? Or what else should I do?
Before I started I took it to a recommended import shop, but they pretty much said "there's a misfire, we'll replace all the coils for $800, then see what happens" and I figured I could trial-and-error myself.
