I have recently changed my fuel filter and subsequently the oil cooler coolant line after the Leakey fuel lines dripped diesel on the coolant line for some time and caused it to deteriorate. I noticed how clean the motors are in the pictures used for the how to's. Now my engine looks like its been through heck and back everything under the engine cover is coated in dust dirt or grease just wondering if anyone has any tips on best practices to follow. I was going to spray the motor with a mild degreaser and follow it with a blast from the garden hose. Any tips on what to cover with plastic or to avoid spraying?
All it takes is spray WARM engine with water under good pressure about twice a year to keep it perfectly clean.
Avoid spraying on electronics, but I did it occasionally with no ill effects.
Everything has a light Cosmoline (waxy) coating that gives it a sheen. On my previous E class, a radiator hose let go and rinsed all of that off. After that, the engine always looked tired and dull.
On my E-320, I just wipe the engine off. I don't think I'd use a harsh engine cleaner.
If you really want good look under the hood - after good washing spray plastic and rubber parts with 303 formula. That also is protectant that will keep them flexible longer.
