Storage draweres....

Hi has anyone purchased the optional storage draweres that fits under the trunk shelf? These actually look like they might be useful. My dealer didn't have any in stock and I was looking for opinions before I ordered.

I was wondering if the seal on these was any good. For example, if I put a flashlight in there is it going to jump out and into the trunk...

I have the drawer installed on my E500 which was delivered a month ago. It's not like the photograph I saw. In the photo, it appeared to be about 1.5-2" high and stretched across most of the width of the trunk. Actually, it is about 4-5" high and about 20" wide and is mounted on the right side leaving plenty of room on the left for a large suitcase or package. The drawer fully closes with a latch so you don't have to worry about anything bouncing out of it. It is fairly deep so there is plenty of room for storage but it has a label on the front which says "MAX 2.2 kg" which is only 5.5 lbs. so you won't be able to put anything very heavy in it. It is ideal for some of the things that might otherwise clutter up the trunk that you keep in case of an emergency or unexpected weather such as flares, flashlight, work gloves, parka, first aid kit, etc.

Thanks for the details. I think I may have it installed. Can have too many compartments - especially since its in the trunk and out of the way.

That's the way I feel, too. Also, supposedly the drawer can easily be removed if you need the extra space but I haven't tried to do that yet.

Some MBs & Bimmers
Hi BoSoxFan

On the bottom of the box/shelf, are there any rubber backing that will minimize the rolling of the items within the box? Something has to grip on the items or else there will be alot of movement when the car is in motion.

Am I making any sense?

I know exactly what you mean. There is a ribbed rubber pad on the bottom which should minimize sliding but I wouldn't put anything round (like a tubular flashlight) in there unless I wrapped it up in something.

Man, I can't believe MB SELLS this stuff, that should really be standard in a car that's this costly. Sheesh--just like rear fold-down seats. Next thing we know, that little rubber thingy that turns the ashtray into a nice little cubby will cost money too.

Yeah, and it's not cheap either. The three cargo nets and drawer cost almost $250. The cargo net in my wife's four year old Toyota Solara is much better than the E500's. I expected a drawer that would hold much more than 5.5 lbs. You can't even put a decent tool kit in there.

How does the storage box work along with the fold-down back seat option?

Sorry, I can't help you since I didn't order the fold-down seat option.

Can you take a picture in your car and post it? The one on the MB website doesn't help much...

Sure, I should have thought of doing that before. I'll take one when I get home tonight.

Here are some pictures. They are somewhat deceptive: the drawer sits entirely under the package shelf when closed. If you were to look straight down from above the trunk opening, you would not be able to see the drawer. Those weird lights on the top of the unit are reflections off the ribbed strength members from the flash. There is about 1/2 inch of clearance between the bracket and trunk roof.

Great pix - thanks! Is the drawer self install or do you need mb to do it. I may pick it up this weekend if its self install. Thanks again.

I ordered it with the car so I could build the cost into the lease and it was already installed when the dealer delivered the car. I would think that you could do it yourself.

04' E500 w/Appear. PKG, Panorama Roof
I had these in the 03. They are very easy to install, just 4 screw clips, but the bracket you actually install into the rear decklid becomes permament as the plastic locking nuts are not reversable.

I optioned not to have the drawer in the 04 as they always had to be removed when you put in 2-3 sets of golf clubs and that was happening with some frequency. Funny thing is that now my golf has slowed down a lot... Go figure....

I found the drawer usefuland may install one in the 04 someday.
