2nd Day Report
Hi all. Second day with the new E320 CDI. Amazing! I am truly impressed with the power and refined manners this car has. I am sure many of you are use to it by now, however this marvelous piece of german engineering can not even be compared to the other japanese cars I have driven in the past. I reached 90 mph for a short duration (yes... I know, speed kills) but the car seemed as though it wanted more. I wonder how it would feel at 130mph? Anyways, just letting you all know i am in love. Best Regards.
There are some pretty strict limits for the first 1,000 miles on the standard E320 and E500.
for the cdi, im not sure what the break in techniques are, but if they are the same for gas, dont go over 3000 rpms, yes 3000, since that is 2/3 your rev limit, but im sure most of your power is below 3000. and dont set cruise for a long period of time, dont hold the rpms at a constant for a long time, kinda like cruise, dont change the gears, and try to vary revs, you can go fast, but vary them...and also, once in a while, jam on the throttle, like wot, not a lot though, but once in a while. GL
The E is rock-solid at 130mph--I know because I hit the limiter at 135 at least twice a month. I have been able to hit about 146mph with momentum though

Limiters are annoying.

Great input. Thanks for the tips. I have been pretty tame with the break-in period. Salesperson told me to vary the revs as to "heat the engine block". Anyone with a CDI with specific instructions I would appreciate it!
I'm sure it'll tell you how to break in the car.

Like yourself, I am really impressed with the performance of the CDI and I have a feeling this particular vehicle will be a member of our family for many years.
Congratulations
John
you crazy..
I hope there's no Northern VA cops reading this board, though

When I picked up my car from Germany the guy who introduced me to the car said not to go over 90mph for th first 1500 miles.
I know--but a car such as this begs to be pushed. I drive it the way it's meant to be driven (and with no one around).

I was talking to the sales manager at Porsche of Arlington once about places to drive fast and he told me about a customer who worked as an analyst in one of the Pentagon's mapping analysis shops. He claimed that he had never been ticketed in his Carrera despite pushing it all the time. When asked how, he replied "Terrain Analysis."
Frankly, that reckless driving citation for >20mph over the limit scares me. My brother-in-law got nailed that way and paid BIG bucks for insurance for the next three years. I've heard that getting caught at >100mph involves a trip to the station to be booked in person and a tow if there is no one to drive your car for you.
Ferrari test drives EVERY car in the mountains south of Maranello. I followed them. While I don't know their revs, they were not shifitng at 3000 rpm.
A dealer puts demos in service with less than 50 miles. How many of them are pounded mercilessly? Does the dealer scrap them? Or sell them as new cars (first registration) with full warranty?
A couple of thousand miles for break-in?
