There's a dampener in the linkage that has become disengaged. Taking things apart will show you what's up.
Someday I'll do that with my glove box; it quit opening softly a year or so ago.

if you are referring to the center console wooden slats that slide back revealing a cup holder (not the butterfly doors) it might be that in the past something was spilled on to it like soda or anything really that would cause unprotected wood to expand. the same thing happened to me and i had to disassemble the center console and to get to the wooden insert. once you do this (there are tutorials) you will notice that the piece that slides back is positioned within two grooves and the wood that slides within those grooves is bare wood so any liquid would cause this to slightly bulge enough over time to the point where it becomes to big to slide within said grooves. this is more true with things like soda etc. anyway once you disassemble it take some sandpaper to the untreated bare wood sides of the wooden slats and reassemble and it will glide back like it used to. i am pretty sure if i understood you correctly, that this is your problem.

Unfasten (no need to remove) gear shift cover to expose two screws.
