hidden feature in rear wiper

hey all, if you have a wagon this applies to you. If you put the car in reverse and have just the front wipers on, the rear wiper will automatically kick in going a short distance, to clear any water so you can see better. I thought that was a nice little feature.

Both my C320 wagon and E320 wagon do that and I hate that feature. The problem is the back window is usually a lot more dirty and has less moisture on it than the front so when you run the rear wiper the dirt scratches into the glass. The C320 back glass especially is scratched to hell. So whenever I get into my cars on a rainy day I have to make sure the wiper are turned off as I back out of my driveway, then switch the wiper on only after the car is in drive. I wish there was a way to turn it off.

My 1995 W124 wagon also does this. Likewise, my 05 E500 does it like your's. Its a clever thought, but not sure I couldn't live without it. It is fun to think about how those ideas came to be. I imagine a conference room full of smoke and Hans presenting his idea hoping that his peers agree to dedicate some budget to it so they can include in their next car.

It's bull **** over engineering for the sake of over engineering. It adds nothing to the car except an additional failure point.

I don't even have a rear wiper.

Wait. Now that I say that, it just sounds wrong.
