Question 5 speed tranny problems

Hey everyone, I have a 2003 E500 with the 5-speed tranny, recently now that it started getting cold my tranny shifts into what feels like between gears, its like a mix of neutral and in gear, I can accelerate enough to drive while its like this but it revs faster with slower speed and when I release the throttle the rpm drops to idle while the car is still driving without losing too much speed, this started a few weeks ago but only when going from 4th to 5th, it would hesitate some when shifting then go "inbetween", could usually fix it by manually down-shifting then up-shifting but that doesn't really work when it doesnt really get first gear in.
Most of the problems cease to exist when the car gets warmer (too little tranny fluid?) but the problem when going from 4th to 5th still happen from time to time.
There's an external tranny oil cooler mounted on my car so it's not connected to the cooler built into the radiator and I havnt noticed any leaks.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Probably a cold transmission. Change oil and filters of tranny.

I've actually tried but the drain bolt is stuck so incredibly hard that the hex hole in the bolt became round, tried a bolt extractor but no progress, possibly because i dont have a lift and needed to use a jack and jackstands making it very tight on space, nothing else that could be done?

Just replace the pan. Doesn't cost very much and then you'll have access to replace the filter as well. Don't forget the gasket also.

Connect STAR and read out the condition of the clutch and brake packs in addition to hydraulic pressures and fill times of the transmission. Will save you much troubleshooting time.

Also those issues are common with the pilot bushing being shot and wicking transmission fluid. Try replacing it. Mine did the same thing til it was replaced, now it's smooth again. The one from FCP Euro has a lifetime warranty.

Thanks everyone, I'll see what I can do.
I'll get back when/if I've managed to fix it.
