Ordered one...

I went to MB and put an order in for an E500, 2005 build. I'm rather excited but I have noticed that there are already a couple of things that are not an option. More or less, the only thing was that the solar panel option was now absent.

More or less, as a 2005, the 200 something features that are suppose to be removed from the E-Class has already been put into affect. Quick question though...I have read that there is going to be a "refresh" for 2006. Does anyone have any details yet? I love the refresh on the 2005 C-Class and I don't see what can happen to the E, but has anyone heard anything yet? Should I wait? Shoot, there's also one other thing, should I just wait for a CDI in CA? I'm itching to drive a diesel again. Don't ask why.

I thought the CDI will not come to california?
**The E320 CDI Sedan does not meet the emissions requirements of California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York or Vermont and is not available in these states.
Or is MB modifying to meet the CA standard?

What I have heard is that the diesiel available in California is not the correct fuel for the CDI engine. It is called Diesel 2 and contains too much sulfur...or something that does not burn clean "enough" to meet CA EPA standards. However 2006, CA is suppose to match the new standards set forth by the US Government hence, allowing the CDI to come to California. We'll see in 2 years!!!

Probably minor styling, however the gauge cluster will probably look like the MY05 C and SLK. They may raise the command module higher in the dash.

Under the hood should me new petrol engines. Definely a new 6, probably a new V-8, however that may be delayed until MY07 with the new S introduction. The E320 will also get a new transmission (the 7G).

Another possiblity is the end of SBC. MB may keep the name, however it will return to a hydraulic system. In addition to an apparent cost savings in manufacture, one brief look at this forum will show the high warranty costs it also has.

The current CDI's won't meet California's standard because Mercedes had to take off the particulate filters on U.S. cars. This is because the U.S. has such poor quality diesel fuel and it would damage the filters.

I believe that the Feds have mandated that low sulfur diesel fuel has to be available by September of 2006. At that time, Mercedes can supply a vehicle that will be 50-State legal.

For those living in California, there appears to be a loophole. Find someone with the current 45-State version that has put at least 7,500 miles on the car and is willing to sell it to you. You should be able to register it in California if it has that many miles and comes in from out of state.

Don't be surprised if you see some 45-State CDI's for sale next year that meet the 7,500 mile criteria.

Really, 7500 miles, thats it?

Wouldn't that really make used E320 CDIs more valuable nationwide? Won't used car dealers be bringing them over in quantity?

A salesman told me about it so I checked the California DOT website and it appears to be the truth.

Just to clarify this, it appears to work just as if you were moving to California with a car that wasn't legal in California. The only criteria appears to be that 7,500 miles.

Of course the car has to come in from another state.

All that means, is that California will be part of the used market for CDIs, without adding any new ones.

That will totally blow the new/used demand relationship. Not only will California's large number of used buyers be in the market, some new buyers may be there also. The high milage need by many in California can make the diesel very attractive there.

So, maybe we will have an opportunity to swap our '05 for an '06 or an '07!
