Unhappy 2003 E500 Hard steering at low RPM!

I recently had a bout with snow in my area and switched off ESP to get unstuck. Now I have a hard steering problem. The ESP works fine, but the steering wheel is nearly impossible to turn while the car is sitting still at idle. The steering feels fine once my speed or rpm's increase. There is also a whine from the steering pump when I turn the steering wheel at idle. The steering pump fluid level is fine and there are no fault codes from my reader. I did a scan while driving and all 4 wheel speed sensors are working properly. There are no warning light from the instrument cluster so I'm at a loss.

I assume it is the power steering pump but wanted some input before throwing parts at the problem. This event was very sudden with no warning of a problem at all. Thanks.

fleet
this has to be a hydraulic issue. hence the intense pressure.
drain the system by gravity and then refill? should be simple to disconnect a line?

That’s an interesting suggestion. I’ll look into it. Thanks.

Power steering fixed!

Problem solved. I just replaced the power steering pump and reservoir. Filled and bled the system and I’m back in business!

I purchased my parts from FCPEURO.COM They offer a lifetime warranty on all their parts! Pump $265 with a $75 core charge. Reservoir $18 and $16 for 1 liter of power steering fluid. All with free shipping! Make sure that you replace the reservoir to pump seal as well as the high pressure hose brass seal which I forgot to order and had to source from my MB dealer. Good Luck!
