Drove 20 miles without KG key, then "Key Not Detected", then car shutoff!

My Keyless Go key was in my laptop bag in the car ('07 E350). I started the car, realized I didn't want my bag in the car, so I took it out and drove off. No alerts. I drive 20-30 minutes then begin to get dash red light warning "KEY NOT DETECTED!" and lots of beeping. So I plan to turn around and drive home to get the key. As soon as I got off the next exit ramp to loop back home and got to 0 MPH, the car shut itself off.

So that sucked. It happened another time on a shorter trip and I never got warnings, just pressed the off button and realized I didn't have the key (same laptop bag scenario).

Why am I not getting a warning immediately when the key leaves the car? KG works perfectly, never had any problems. Thoughts? Love suggestions, because this is the kind of **** that happens to me all the time, would love to prevent it!

Sorry, it's a user error. I never have this problem because I always have the key with me. If the keyless go fails for any reason, you can always just put the key in the ignition as it doesn't require batteries or if you have any problems with keyless go which could be due to the antenna, module, handle wiring etc.

Driving 101 is to have the key with you...

Yeah, no **** it's a user error. Thrilled to know you never have this problem because you always have your key with you - it's super helpful in identifying the root of the problem.

There is still a problem here with my KG that I'd like to resolve, and would love to hear any useful advice that helps me and perhaps others not wind up in this same situation.

I'm not sure you really have a problem. May be working as designed. You could always get it scanned to see if you have any keyless go error codes or get the firmware updated.

I've never driven a keyless go type car that didn't beep, blink, honk, flash or do something to let the user know the second the key leaves the car. I'd expect that behavior. The flashing/beeping "KEY NOT DETECTED" should have happened as I rolled out of the driveway worst case, not 30 minutes later.

Anyone with Keyless Go want to start their car and walk away from the car with the key and tell me what it does?

Not shutting the engine off at highway speeds is safety precaution.
When I agree that warning about lost signal key mighty be appreciated, it doesn't happen often in real life that someone will start the car having key in it, than took the key out having engine still running.
That reminds me story who was popular on forum when keyless go come on the market.
Wife was going to take her MB to a gym, when husband decided to share the ride and go to hardware story - using the time she spends in the gym. So they got into the car with husband behind the wheel, drive to the gym and wife is leaving for her excersise.
The husband makes additional 2 miles before he stops at red light and engine shuts-off. The key is in wife's purse.
I did some tests with the key. When you have engine running and you take the key out, there is time delay before car will act on lost key. Than I had the key on garage shelf, 6 ft from the car and the engine would not start due to lack of the key.
Meaning somehow the car makes very small detection space.
Did not time it, sorry

I just tested this on my '09 GL550. Started the car, got out put the key 20 feet away, got back in and backed up the car.
The red screen with Key Not detected popped up for about 3 seconds and went away on its own It did not say "1 Message" as it would with other warnings.
I could pull forward and back, come to a full stop and it never shut off on its own.
