sorry.....question continued...

i am constantly being told by friends that my fan is way noisy. i noticed it is not the fan , but rather the auxillary fan that kicks in and is extremely loud. is this normal???? e500 in hot humid east coast summer. car has been flawless since mid march delivery with 6500 miles so far. and proof of sound deadening is i havent heard fan from inside car once.......lol.

Yes, I agree its loud but probably deamed necessary by the german (over-kill) engineers..... I actually opened the hood while than fan was running and "carefully" put my hand behind it and was amaized how much air was being push on the engine. One thing for sure, there is no way your engine will over heat in traffic while your sitting in comfort with the A/C blazing. It felt as if there was a 60 mph wind in there. As long as I don't hear it in the cabin (and I don't) we'll get along just fine.... Don't worry about it. I would rather have more air flow on the engine than not enough.

Whenever your display says "Max cool" it sounds like someone is pushing sheets from a newspaper thru a window fan, but it gets you cool & dumps the heat. Roll up the windows & listen to music!

I wonder if that is a problem on both the E500 and the E320. I thought I read that the E320 had slats to close up the radiator and improve aerodynamics that was not on the E500. It could be that the E500 didn't allow adequate airflow to handle the heat it generated. Therefore the fan.

I agree, I live in Arizona so the aux fan kicks on with regularity and its very noisy. I have to agree its hardly noticeable from inside the car though and i'm happy to have the added security of a robust engine cooling system here in the desert.

DavidNJ,

“Not a problem” but indeed an annoyance and certainly, at times, an embarrassment for both e320 & e500 most noticeable by onlookers while standing still.

O4500,

Couldn’t have said it better myself @ 100 not too bad, but when it hits 114…

I think most cars with electric fans, big engines, A/C have loud fans when they are hot. One solution may have been a large radiator and/or grill. My Supra uses an engine driven fan. It might be a little quieter at idle on a hot day, however noisier on a cold day.

My aux fan is very loud too at idle. My car is currently at the service center and they told me they are going to change some blower for the fan that would make it quiet.

For CLK 500's there is a wiring harness TSB that eliminates this problem. The fans on the E are of a different desgin but may function like those on the new CLK. Ask you dealer's shop foreman for the tsb or check either the 209 or techincal sections of this site.

I recently took delivery of my replacement e500 (referr to sig for details) and [thanks to you guys] I noticed the obnoxiously loud fan.

..anyway, to make a long story short, I drove to a nearby overlook and started reading through the manual and trying out some of the functions.. eventually I popped the hood and looked around..

..that's when I noticed that the [aux] fan has three (3) metal clips on the inner edge of the blades (two on one blade, and another on an adjacent blade).. ..they don't seem to serve any purpose, but, nonetheless, I decided not to remove them.

Has anyone else noticed this on their rides? What function could these clips possibly serve? Counterweights?

I almost fell off my chair with the analogy to the air boat.. It really does sound like that although the first time I hear it was yesterday (here in Canada) although my cool was not set to MAX COOL.. I had just started the car and it was sitting in the sun.. Has this happened to you guys when you weren't in MAX COOL? I turned off the AIR COND and the sound stopped..

Thanks.

My E500 fan is very noisy too. I can't hear the fan when I am in the car with the windows up though.

However, it isn't just the E-Class cars. I was in a mall parking lot today and heard a very noisy car coming up behind me. I though it would be an E-Class, but when it passed me it turned out to be a C230.

I love that the fan is noisy. Outside it sounds like there is a jet under the hood and that people should get out of its way.
