Do you have the automatic trunk closer, or was this just because of the regular trunk latch?!

My $.02:

This might sound obvious, but.. make sure that you do not have one of your keys in the trunk (or maybe lying on the back seat, wedged between the rear folding armrest).

If this were the case, the trunk should unlock almost immediately, but if you have a weak battery, who knows..

This could only happen if you have KeylessGo

the trunk is the regular type, and i do not have any keys in the trunk.
this the second time the trunk has opened on its own, i were to go out and open the trunk,it will not close, unless i force it, a few weeks ago when it happened, i oiled the latch, and it seemed to work of for a week,

I don't have a clue what frequency the regular key fob operates on, but is it possible that some nearby source of RF (like a neighbor's garage door opener or key remote) is somehow spoofing the "open-trunk" function of your car? Or does encryption (supposedly) prevent that kind of thing? Even if possible, that wouldn't explain the difficulty in closing the trunk, unless another RF source was continuously transmitting something interpreted by your car as "open trunk."

A few years ago I stayed at a hotel and parked my dear departed BMW 528 in front. In the morning I went out front and pushed the key fob button to unlock my BMW. It unlocked. So did the Chrysler parked next to it - I could see its door lock buttons pop up.

I'm thinking the latch assembly will need to be replaced assuming you have an '04. The '03s have a deadbolt latch assembly BUT MB replaced this with an electronic latch assembly for '04.

Might I suggest that you list a description of your car as your sig? Anyway, I still think the latching assembly needs to be replaced. GL.

Umm, they're ALL electronic since about 1998 or earlier. The deadbolt is just an add-in to the electronic assembly, which prevents the electronic release from operating.

Is there a way to retrofit the deadbolt to a car without in (e.g MY05)?

I thought you already checked and they wouldn't supply the part any longer, even to those cars that originally came with it?

I believe in Europe, the car is still delivered with the lockable trunk. So maybe the solution would be to purchase that locking mechanism from Europe and rekey it to fit your key, if it even comes with a tumbler..

However there hasn't been any specific answers...more along the lines of how it can't be done. The deadbolt discussion here seemed like we were on track to an answer.

The button on the remote should be disabled while the key is in the ignition or the car is running.

went to the dealer this morning, he says its the catch they may need adjusting, and its not locking properly, but i did not leave it as they offered no loaner, and it would have to stay over the holiday period,i am thinking there is a electrical glitch, because as i was driving to the dealer, i could here a crackle over the radio, and the radio turned of twice, may not be related, but something funny is going on

You need the radio software update. Ask for it when you bring the car in.

Masterfull German Electronics Engineering... but for the most part, to their credit, they are addressing all the issues & fixing them rather quickly.
