06 E320 Cdi 225/55 R16 tires vs 215/55 R16

Hello,

Time for new tires on my daughters 06 E320 CDI. Factory tire size is 225/55 r16.

I usually get my tires at Costco. The costco tire technician said that the 225/55 r16 is becoming difficult to get because it's being phased out and discontinued. He recommended switching to 215/55 r16

Does anyone have experience switching from 225/55 R16 tires to 215/55 R16? The tech said it's ok to switch because the size difference is less than 3%

Thanks

I have 215/55R16 in both summer Tires and winter tires. They work perfectly fine but the Costco guy is wrong. There's plenty of 225/55R16 tires available. Maybe not at Costco but check out Discount Tire Direct for example or any other online tire seller.

Thanks tjts. Thats good to know.

Did you notice any differences in handling, performance or economy when you made the switch to 215's?

I went from 245/45R17 to 215/55R16. The ride quality improved enormously and the noise level inside was also reduced. The difference between 225 and 215 is 10 mm of thread width. It's very very close but not worth it if you're paying for new tires. Find a retailer that will sell you the proper size. I bought my 16-inch wheels and tires used on Craigslist that's why I tolerate the 215/55R16 tires. I wouldn't pay new tire prices for these even though they're michelins.

16 inch wheels are optically an abuse to the beauty of the W211 chassis. At least 17 is recommended in my opinion.

+1 on the Discount Tire recommendation. We've bought 2 sets for our two 2005 E320 CDIs there. I went with the Yokohama YK470 GTX and have been pleased with them. Let us know what you decide and how you like them.
