Can't Access Main Battery in Trunk

We have a 2004 E320 Wagon. About a week ago the battery died. We had it tested and it was bad so we got a new. Since then we have been using the car almost daily. Yesterday we did not go anywhere and today when we went to get in the car the doors wouldn't unlock. Dead battery. We unlocked the door with the valet key and popped open the trunk. I went to pull up the carpeted cover in the back to access the battery and the handle completely broke off and I cannot get it to open at all. I literally cannot even access the battery or our tools. Has anyone had this happen or know a trick to get it open. Underneath where the handle was there is a place to put the key. When I put the key in and turn it nothing happens. Is there anything I can do to get this hatch to open or am I going to have to force it open and break it? Also is there anyway to charge the battery without accessing the main battery? I've seen a couple videos of people accessing the wires under the glove compartment to charge up their battery. Any advice is much appreciated.

Yes, you can jump the system through the small fuse block under the carpet on the passenger footwell..... or you can also power the system through the cooling fan connector. I highly recommend a slow charge.

Well, there should be a charging connector under the hood of wagons? It was definitely the case in my E500 4Matic.
Connect a charger there if you need to charge the battery (it will actually charge both batteries this way)
The connection shoud be located on the right hand side under the hood.
