Kentucky Fried SAM
2 weeks ago i was leaving my sons baseball game when this event happened. I pulled a u-turn and started to drive out when my windshield sprayers came on without command, them my wipers, then the cluster warning of display failure, esp, abs, and then the poof of smoke from under the steering column, then the cooling fans went on high. I tore *** across the lot to an open grass section and had everyone evacuate the car. Key in hand and 10 feet away the car began to try and start itself. Turned over but no ignition. In a desperate fury to try and stop my very favorite car from burning to the ground i popped the hood and found smoke coming from the fuse block container upper left side. I pulled the cover and it was toasty and full of smoke. I wdnt around back, tore everything out of the rear and disconnected the battery. All that being said i towed it home and started some research. I found a Sprinter forum that had a thread on this issue verbatim. Nothing from our side.
I purchased another SAM module from an 05 E500 with all fuses, relays, connectors and about 1 foot of wire still intact.
I did notice the module on the left of the sam has smoke stain and apparently also got a bit toasty on the lower corner (wiring and connectors are visually fine). The ECU to the right of the SAM has no visible damage. I soldered all of the wiring that was compromised. Location I13 on the SAM has a blue wire with a black tracer that is not included on the new connector so i have one terminated wire unaccounted for in the fuse box. I also have a light in the display for distronic which my vin is not equipped with.
Long story short, abs, esc are still in error. Car will not turn over. All other functions restored. I jumped the starter relay and got the car to easily turn over. The only current code i have is no communication with engine ecu. (I have Star). Key turns, nothing there. Im figuring that one darn wire is the ground for the starter relay...or possibly the ecu. Im entirely too tired to continue tonight. If you have any suggestions, feel free to chime in.
Happy fathers day to all you dads out there....im not spending mine under the bonnet.
Here's some pics of the SAM.
The interior fuse for the ecu was blown. Ran the car for two hours going through star functional actuations and then physical actuation. I will test drive tomorrow after work.
