2008 E350 shaking when idling. Low performance but still runs.

It is idling low and shaking pretty good in idle. Took it to a local MB tech (not dealer) and he said the codes read issues with the upper intake manifold and needs to be replaced. He said he could replace it for around $800.00. I just recently replaced the fuel pump and the crankshaft sensor...
Any other ideas?

There is a good article explaining the problem with the intake manifold. Basically a plastic piece breaks and causes the problem. I would be concerned if they replace the intake manifold with the same plastic piece, which means it'll fail again in the future.

The problem starts inside where deposits increase friction of the flaps until the outer plastic arm breaks. Replacing this without checking the internals may lead to catastrophic failure (parts getting sucked into the combustion chambers).

So at the end the whole manifold will have to be replaced. OE manufacturer is Pierburg, no aftermarket parts available.

That's a decent price considering the OEM Pierburg manifold is about $600 and it's several hours to do it. But FCPeuro has a lifetime warranty.

Or maybe he's getting the rebuilt one on eBay for $350.

There's several videos on youtube on how to replace the manifold, nothing super complicated, but lots of parts to take apart to get at the manifold. There are also kits in the $30-$100 range that can replace a bunch of parts like the lever or other parts of the manifold, but those are short term fixes, will probably only last a few years before further problems occur later. Basically the flaps will get more gummed up and eventually break which could cause engine damage later. The proper fix is to replace the manifold. They usually last anywhere from 100k-160k so it would probably have to done again at some point, but it'd probably be years before that occurs, plus with the FCPeuro lifetime warranty, you just pay for labor. The cheaper option is the one from eBay with the rebuilt one, should probably last just as long, but it only comes with a 1 year warranty.
