2009 E350 Wagon

I have been reading numerous post about the E350 wagon. I have found a 2009 with aprox 120,000 miles. Its a black wagon with 4 wheel drive and third row seat. I have not seen the car in person and do not have the VIN number to run a check yet.

My plan is to have a older unique style Mercedes to use as a third car around town and for short distances.

From reading post on this site, it seems 2009 is good year to avoid the timing chain issue, but still have questions on the .cam shaft issues. What about the transmission.

Do all 2009 have airbags and rear shock absorbers. From what I have read it is not the Airmatic system that is prone to age problems. Do you manually add air or is it a sealed system. How are they different.

What is the passenger weight for the third row seats.

Finally , any advice. Thanks

You could look for an e320 or e500 wagon? The M112 and M113 engines are very solid, no balance shaft issues. They were over built in my opinion, Mercedes' first v6.

The 5 speed transmissions are clunky but reliable and easy to work on. Cant speak for the 7 speed ones, ive read you need STAR to fix them if they break.

I believe that all w211 wagons have self leveling rear suspension from the factory. Which is a very basic rear only airmatic that you cant adjust. You will still have the air compressor, (1) level sensor, air bags in the rear and all the plumbing. Should still have regular shocks in the rear as well. My 2005 e320 wagon does.

The 3rd row seat is a joke. My 7 year old can sit there but with his booster seat his head hits the headliner. No adult will fit lol. My dad tried to sit there and i about died laughing.

Buy the nicest one you can find. I bought a "project" wagon and its been an adventure. Reliable though after a lot of wrenching. Here's mine after i got done buffing her.

Depending on how it's optioned it either has coils up front and self leveling airbags in rear OR airbags all around (aka airmatic). The quick way to tell the difference is look for some buttons just behind the shifter for level control. That's airmatic. Rear airmatic airbags and shocks are far more expensive than self leveling equivalent. Both systems use an air compressor and level sensors to adjust ride height. With self leveling you can load up the car with 7 passengers and the ride height remains the same. It's awesome.

The transmission is 722.6 5spd auto. It's the best trans MB ever made. Just change the ATF every 50k miles.

The 3rd row seat is limited to 110lbs and 4'6".

Read the owners manual. The 3rd row should be treated as a built in booster seat all by itself. You 7 year old doesn't need an additional booster back there.

Just make sure to check your local laws. The people's republic of Virginia wont let me put a kid under 8 back there. Then if they meet the weight or height requirements for a booster seat it has to be used.

just curious since we are on the topic of airmatic here: are they frequently problematic? is it worth changing older coils down the road to airmatic? did the issues with earlier versions ever get fixed in later versions?

Airmatic is reliable but it has a lot of expensive wear parts. For example:

Bilstein rear shock for a wagon with self leveling suspension is $143
Bilstein rear shock for a wagon with Airmatic suspension is $365

Bilstein rear air bag for self leveling suspension $275
Bilstein rear airbag with Airmatic $395 left side, $446 right side.
The price difference is even bigger on the front axle.

And then replacing the airmatic rear airbags is a monster job because it has a separate reservoir which requires partially dropping the rear subframe.

Thats why so many airmatic cars end up getting junked or converted to coil springs.

Do you have buttons behind the shifter to move the car up and down? If yes then you have airmatic. If not then it's just rear self leveling.
