My $425 Exhaust with Tips

Actually, the first picture is that with the mufflers installed before I cut the bumper. The OEM downturns made it difficult to position the tips, and since I only had one chance to cut the bumpers, I had the installer put the mufflers in first. Those tips are removable downturns.
These pictures below are the finish product. For the price, they didn’t turn out too bad. I didn’t care for the look of having the tips hang below the bumper. Thought about all the other much more expensive alternatives, but I thought they all stuck out too much.
I used Magnaflow components similar to Epower’s. Sounds pretty good, perhaps a little on the loud side, but it is actually getting quieter. The installer mentioned that this would with the Magnaflows. It does appear to be getting quieter, unless I am just getting used to it. Has a low frequency rumble, similar to older muscle cars, but not quite as loud.
For this price, if it didn’t work out, I would just do it all over with some other exhaust.

I think it turned out nicely. Similiar to the AMG setup. And for that price it can't be beat. Did that include the labor to cut the bumper? And how easy was it for your shop to cut it?

Thanks! I actually cut the bumper, and it was pretty easy. I just made an outer template composed of the blue type masking tape used for painting. This also functioned well as protection. Once the tape was aligned, I drilled 1/2" holes close to the edges, particularly at the curved portions. I then used a hand saw to cut close to the template lines, but making sure I never went over the lines. Then I used some flat files for the straight portions, and round files for the round portions.
Since the bumper is only thin plastic, it is very simple. I then hand sanded it, before using primer, paint and clearcoat.
Just need a little common sense and a little skill. Pretty simple.

Looks like the one the RB Tech built for me. they charge me $700 to build the 2 mufflers+ quad tips+ K&N filter+cutting, welding, labor. I guess my deal wasn't too bad afterall. But, I am still pissed that they didn't give me the bigger tips that I wanted. what's the diameter of your tips? 76mm or 83mm? Eisenmann has 83mm tips. they look nice!

The parts are pretty inexpensive: $75 each for the mufflers, and $55 each for the tips. The rest of the $425 was for labor. Probably could have found someone cheaper for the install, since that is pretty conventional, but I was too lazy to shop around.

That looks very nice. IMO, the tips looks perfect...not too long. Is there anyway you can record a wav or avi file. I would like to hear it at idle and at WOT.

Calbenzo. See my pictures at the "Spoiler" thread.
Man, if you live closer, I would have paid you to cut my bumper for me. Did you pay $55 per tip or $55 for 4 tips? I still think 3" is too small..... Did you have the chance to check out Eisenmann site? The 3.25" tips I think look perfect. I tried to take the car to a muffler shop(since RB TECH want to charge me $200 to changed the tips that they didn't give me in the 1st place). The shop told me that I will need to cut more of the bumper because they think the heat of the tip will melt the bumper. There is clearly about more than 1/2 " gap right now, plus I have seen cars w/ tips squeezed tightly, place against the cut out of the bumper and don't see any burn or paint damage. Will that be a problem? or those amatures are too scare to touch a mercedes?

Lionhead,
It is really quiet at idle, barely audible in the car, but definitely a low rumble at start-up. From 1000-2000, it is the loudest, although as I mentioned, it is starting to get quieter. I probably only have 150 miles on the muffler.
It isn't loud, but definitely the rumble of an older american muscle car from 1000-2000. The problem is that the 7-speed tranny generally keeps you between 1300-2000 rpms.
My laptop has a mic., so I'm sure it can be done, but I haven't ever used it. I will have to figure it out.
yxc145,
I did see yours yesterday. They look great. I thought you had cut the bumper, I couldn't tell for sure. How does it sound?
These are fake dual tips that join at the muffler. Each dual tip cost $55. The parts were only something like $260+tax all together.
When I first was imagining the tips, 3" seemed big. Know, as you mentioned, I think 3.25 would be perfect.
I only have about 1/4 inch above the tips, which are dual walled. The dual wall insulates them somewhat so that they are not so hot on the outside. then I made it about 3/4 inch on the sides. The longest I have driven so far is only 30 miles, but the surrounding valence was only mildly warm.

Man, I'm jealous! That looks great with the cutouts. I have been thinking about doing the same since I installed the Magnaflows, but I think you have motivated me to do the same. I have said forever that it makes no sense to get $2,000+ exhaust installations when just about any installer could do the same or better with this type of Magnaflow install...now out to do some cutting!
In regard to the sound, you'll grow to love it...

Magnaflow parts
Could you tell me the part#'s for the Magnaflow exhaust? Out here in the Northern Ohio wasteland no one has a clue what to use, Magnaflow website not much help either. Also, any special issues on the install? Do you need a connecting sleeve or is the replacement oversized to slide over?. Many thanks!

Thanks Vkaushal!
JZ500,
Any muffler shop should be able to mount the mufflers either sliding the end over with a sleeve or directly to it if they are the same diameter. On mine, they cut the tubing about 1 ½ feet in from the muffler.
I went with the 2.5" diameter "offset same end muffler" p/n 11376 here: http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/universal/oval.htm As it turns out, you can go with the 2.25" diameter which is that of the OEM exhaust tubing I believe. That one is p/n 11375.
The tips anyway are 2.25" diameter. The muffler is way smaller than the OEM's, at least twice as big overall. You might even be able to fit a slightly larger muffler in there. However, by getting a smaller one, this will give the installer some room to move the muffler and tip around to the position you want it.
The tips are the double walled ones called the "Dual Round Rolled Edge Angle Cut, p/n 35168 here: http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/tips/doublewall.htm
The fit and finish of the tips is very good. They even cost less than those add-on tips you can get on Ebay or Performance Products.
