Question Is this normal?

I noticed this the other day on my 2004 E320 Wagon. I was on a hill at a stop light, took my foot off the brakes, and the car started rolling backwards. On all the other cars I've owned with auto transmission, the cars have always moved forward slowly when I take the foot off the brake pedal, or at least remained in place, even on steep grades. So, is this normal, or is something wrong with the car.

Sorry to say - but it is normal.

Putting the tranny in "W" mode does prevent the car from rolling back.

normal. I hear the european models have some special braking mechanism that prevents the rollback...

The "W" setting is for winter mode. Car pulls away in 2nd gear to minimize wheelspin on snow, ice, etc.

W or C

That would mean W mode is the same as C mode in the US. Well, the car still rolls backward in C mode.

2004E320S,

it is "ab"normal but it happens in all US w211. (becuase mbusa saves money on a good feature called "sbc-hold")

watch out rolling back when your car on a hill. (fortunately, you live in San Diego not San Francisco) I don't know how much money can be saved in each US w211 comparing with the damages of cars (even people) due to rolling back. (I knew the "W" mode can fix it but what should I do it manually?)

2004E320S,

In your 2004 model, it is called "S" mode not "C" mode. (S stands for Sport, who knows w211 is a sport car?)

In my 2003 model, the "S" stands for Standard. (I have to use "W"inter mode to avoid rolling back.)

Yup! Use my parking brake when on a hill, just like a stick!
