Oil Change and Topsider
Anyone know where I can buy a "topsider" to remove the oil in my car?
Also, for those that have done it.
How many litres do you put in (2004 E500) and what is the type of oil that Mercedes puts in the car? The brand, type etc..
Thanks!

They use Mobil 1 here in the US. I just bought 8 quarts since I plan on changing oil at 3500-4000 miles, although I only have 1250 right now. I can't remember how many quarts the e500 takes, however.
I'm also interested on where to buy a topsider.
Can't be harder than my Porsche. That is a pain in the ***. I have to remove the wheel, and dismantle part of the fender and wheel well housing to get to one of the oil filters. I just pay someone now, because it takes 2 hours. Costs $150 plus 10 quarts of mobile 1!

Thanks for the link..
Do you own that pump? If so, is it any good.. Does it actually get all the oil out?
Also, is it easy to get at the filter? Anyone ever taken that off?

I don't own a pump. I prefer the traditional way of draining the oil through the drain plug. I just feel that the topsider won't be able to suck out all the dirt that may be sitting at the bottom of the oil pan. My friend has his own shop so I have the luxury of changing my own oil using his lift. You'll also need a special oil filter cap in order to remove the filter. Just attach it to your ratchet. Oil filter is sitting right in front of you towards the front of the engine. Its about a 30 min job or less if you have the right tools.

I use the Griots Garage manual pump one. Really easy to use. I highly recommend it.
I changed the oil in my E55 and it takes 8.5 quarts of oil to refill.

the Topsider is sold at most marine and boat supplies stores.

Is there really a drain plug on the bottom? I thought this was the only way..
My brother owns a custom car shop and I could probably stick it on the lift there. Where is the plug?

Bought the Griot's one for $64.99. Looks pretty simple to use, but I only have 1500 miles on the car so I probably won't do the first change for another 1000 miles or so.
I did overfill my 993, so I'm going to pump a little out using this. Should be much easier than doing a partial drain. The dipstick on the porsche is useless!

Actually, it has about a 2 liter greater capacity, but probably not worth the price increase since either way, you will have to do it twice for the w211 application. Otherwise, it is just Griot's repackaged product of Tempo.

I bought the Griots topsider, and it is so incredibly easy to use. Anyone that can pour oil into your motor can use this gadget.
I didn't change the oil on the Benz yet, but I used it to pump a little oil out of my Porsche. Essentially all you do is put the tube into the oil spout (or dipstick spout) and give it a few pumps. Too easy. Much easier than the conventional way, and much less mess.

konigstiger,
Yes, that is the topsider I saw.
My understanding is that the oil tube is the one under the air cleaner and the one at the back of the engine bay goes to the transmission. I certainly wouldn't want to pump out the transmission fluid and replace it with Mobile/1. I have been dropping the belly pan and changing the oil the old fashioned way. That is a royal pain and I make sure that I have a new crush ring and only torque the drain plug to 25nm.

Has anyone tried the vacuum pumps AND then drained the plug to see if there was any oil left over?
The other issue is that I thought that the oil drain plug was magnetic and caught any small metal particles.
Talking about metal particles....
An old trick of mine was to clamp a very strong magnet to the side of my disposable filter and catch anything metalic. I couldn't do it with my 95 diesel and if the new CDI is the same as the old, again I will not be able do it.
Anywho......
I like to switch to the Topsider but before I do, I would dearly like to know if there is any oil left behind.
BWT, I hope that you guys are aware that there is a new standard for MB oil. It's now 229.5.

For anyone living in the Canada.....
Princess Auto has a heavy duty, all steel unit that they are clearing out for $169 ($125 US). This thing weighs about 50 pounds and has a 15 gallon capacity. You must have a compressor to make it work.
If you are interested, you better act fast becasue they are clearing them out because of lack of sales.
I also bought a small drill pump and try to use that method. I will use it on the liftrucks at work and report back as to how efficient it is.
