E350 timing chain. Call me lazy

I get a knocking noise at the very front of the engine. I have placed all the pullies, chain tensionor and I still get the brief knock on cold start up. I think it may be the chain of a collapsed lifter
If I opt to change the chain is it possible to expose chan and wind new chain on, old off this to avoid all that dismantling.

Cheers

This is the best resource I've found on doing that job.

I would definitely want to source the chain tool for reconnecting the new chain in there (beg, borrow or steal is probably better than buying the tool - the tool from MB is ridiculously expensive although you might be able to find a 3rd party version).

Thank you so much for your reply. It looks like a slow methodical weekend job. I could change all the liters at the same time.

Cheers

I did the lifters on my son's car without changing the timing chain. You need to replace the timing chain tensioner and the pulse wheels in any case. I have no idea why anyone would open the engine up like that and not change all the lifters...

Otherwise, like you say, a slow methodical weekend+ job...
