Minor Dent Removal

I recently incurred a minor ding at the body line of the passenger door from some inconsiderate soul. I'm still not sure where I received it since I'm pretty careful where I park. Thanks in part to the nanopaint, I suppose, the paint was not chipped.

Anyway, many could probably live with it, but it bugged the crap out of me.

I called Dent Pro here in the Bay Area, and they did a great job. I was worried since it was at a body line, but they said they could get it out. Cost about $90, but worth it to me. Pretty impressive.

The thought of this happening always scares the hell out of me. Glad to “see” that they did an excellent job. Curious though, did you observe the repair and if so, what method was used?

The technique was much different than I anticipated. I had always imagined that somehow they use suction of something. Now when I think about it, that would be too difficult to apply at a body line, and might even dislodge the clearcoat on older paint.

Anyway, he didn't have to remove the interior panels in this case, although he said they do it in some cases. Here, with the window rolled down, he slid a protective sheet between the window and the outer door panel. He then used some tools to push out the dent from the inside. Then he pushed it back in from the outside (using a rubber ended punch rod and a hammer), repeating this process until it was flat.

He mentioned that mercedes, and other higher end vehicles, were easier to work on since the alloy of the panels were better, and paints and clearcoats applied were more flexible.

I've used PDR ("paintless dent removal") in the past and can also attest to the good results; you would think that a small dent would stretch the metal and make total removal impossible, but a good PDR person can make a small dent literally disappear. They use rods and other specialized tools to manipulate the metal back into shape from behind. If the dent is reasonably close to a window they can reach it via the weatherstripping. A dent that can't be reached from behind without major disassembly would be a problem for them.

If the hailstorm was recent, look for PDR ads in your local paper. I've heard that some PDR techs are itinerant and the follow hailstorm reports. If I found one that way I would avoid paying in advance for the work, though.

I got a dent right by the fuel filler, which is a totally inaccessible area. they removed it with suction which worked perfectly. The paint had been undamaged. They said the dent was from the back door of an SUV, which made a small impression just above waist height.

I am also careful where I park, my partner complains about how far we have to walk, but someone will always get you!

That's a nice job. I've had similar work done on several MBs in the past at Dent Magician (our name for the franchise here in the Northeast). Costs much less than traditional body work and no paint matching nightmares!!

I had a dent in the rear passenger side door on the crease too. I also watched the fellow massage the dent out with the tools described above. The results are fantastic.

I had similar dents in a C280 that were removed so I purchased 4 year dent removal insurance for $300 when I bought the E320. I figured that even if I didn't need to use the insurance, it would be like carrying an umbrella to prevent rain. The fellow came to my house to remove the dent and removed the bad dent and another small dent in the front passenger door. He said that he would have charged me $149 each for the dents so I figure that the insurance has paid for itself and I still have 3 more years of coverage.
