stats from 4 day getaway
Miami to Sarasota in the E500: 223 miles, avg 70mph, avg 25 mpg, 98% highway miles.
Can't say enough about what a smooth highway cruiser this beast is. Love the fact that we averaged 25 mpg both ways - not too bad for a V8!
Car was loaded down with our luggage and plenty of stuff for the baby, but you didn't even notice it!
Not quite 2 1/2 months old and already have 5600 miles on it... can't seem to get my butt out of this car

Highway mileage of about 25 mpg @ 70 mph seems typical for an E500; not shabby at all. My (deceased) E39 BMW 528i would get 30 mpg at that speed, but then the E500 has 60% more horsepower and 80% more displacement, so a 5 mpg "penalty" isn't unreasonable. And, what people may not realize is how exceptionally clean a W211 is, even compared to the emissions of cars a few years older.
Now, if I could just get motivated to swap the OEM Continental tires on my car for something better, like Michelins. The car is quiet and smooth on good roads but falls down badly in those respects on less-than-perfect roads, and I tend to blame the tires for that.

That's pretty good. I recently had to drive the beast from L.I. to Ohio. Once I got past the hellish NY-NJ traffic I flew 
There were stretches of several hours at a time where I averaged 100-120 mph. Just me, (my V1 and lidatek) and the 18 wheelers. Avg. MPG? 19. Around town I get 12-13
