Wrecked '05 E320 CDI suggestions

My pride and joy for the last 13 years was rear-ended in front of my house 10 minutes after I parked it. After running outside to see the source of the noise I started walking over to the car that hit me. Three times he started the late-model Ford Escape and tried to run, but his car was having none of it. The driver, a neighbor, (suspected to be intoxicated) told police he swerved to avoid a small animal... Eye witness in front of my house said there were no animals or traffic when he drifted into the parking lane at what was estimated 40-45 MPH in a 25! Knocked my car 32' down the road. Rookie cop resisted giving him a Breath-a-lyzer, so he got a Failure to control his vehicle citation.

Anyway...I am the second owner of this car and bought it in '07. Loaded with Keyless-Go, upgraded leather, Harmon Kardon 6 disc, Drive-Dynamic Multicontour Front Seats, Entertainment Package, Nav, sunroof, heated/cooled seats, privacy screens rear windows, hardwired Parrot bluetooth. All front ball joints replaced within last 3 years, transmission & motor mounts replaced, 180,000 miles and would routinely get 42-32 MPG on highway trips.

My question is- what to do with it? Insurance gave me $7,000 and I paid $9,500 for a true CREAMPUFF from a DEALER. Must have been owned by and garage kept by the proverbial "little old man" as it had ALL the services done by the dealer, only 109,000 miles, no dings or dents, and the headlamp lenses must never have seen daylight. Should I part it out? Or would I get a better price selling online? Any suggestions?

Thanks for any ideas.

The neighborhood drunk strikes again. Insurance 7k paid 9k so that's a 2k difference. I would part it out, and get some of that 2k diff, however if you still feel attached to the ride get some estimates and get it fixed. Sorry to hear about your ride.

Paid $9500, 13 years ago. Getting 7K Insurance money for it after all this time? So you drove a car for 13 years for 2500 bucks or $192 per year.

I would not worry about a thing and I think you should be happy with the outcome.

I paid 6900 for my 2007 E350 with 101K miles from the second owner.

Have you considered fixing it? That's a very clean and well optioned car, not many are left.

No, actually I replaced my wrecked one with a creampuff for $9,500. I paid $37,000 for it in 2006.

It was the cheapest I could find in 2007, and I looked all over for months.. That was as loaded as I could find, too Wanted the Pano roof, but no luck. Couldn't believe I found a real creampuff at the dealer for $9500. Elderly owner who kept it in garage. Even the headlights looked brand new!. All dealer maintenance and they gave me a crazy printout of everything he had done. 109,000 miles on a 15 year old car? Dealer ended up fixed the Black Death under the 30 day warranty, too.

New one doesn't have a/c seats, Keyless Go, or the full leather package (doors), or the dealer installed Parrot, but looks and smells like new. Just need to find a good home for the wreck. I just put it on the Marketplace here for $3500. Engine and tranny in great shape.

Tysinger Mercedes is a class act.

Have you considered swapping out some of the options from the old car to the new one? I'm sure that the leather package for sure and potentially the A/C seats can be an easy swap, provided the interiors are in good enough shape and are the same colour
...though if they aren't you could theoretically do a full interior swap or 'customise' it with mismatched parts...

You called it. My other one has an ash interior, so no go. steering wheel, dash, carpet all ash. Doable, but way more work. Plus I'd have to monkey with the Comand system and rework the dash controls to put in a/c. Now, if I could just get the Keyles Go, but all the door handles, and electronics transfer would be a nightmare.

Good thought's though. Thanks

The 05-06 CDI is in huge demand, especially a clean one. Not many know about them, but those that do are willing to pay for them. One of the best kept secrets in the car world.

I guess you have to really want a diesel. I don't see the point of spending $9500 on a CDI when I can have a quicker, more reliable E500 sport for less than half the price. $5500 difference buys a lot of gas.

Latest update- A local body shop will cannibalize my black '06 E320 CDI (a little rough with 280k miles and low turbo boost) to repair the damage to my wrecked E320 for $6,100. HOWEVER, he will not touch the electronics smashed in the rear.

My question is-

1. Using any parts I need from the '06 as a donor, is this something I can tackle myself. ie. Is this mainly a matter of plug and play? Car starts easily and Comand comes up but no menus. Window works. Engine in limp mode.

Thoughts?

As always, thank you all for you advice.

Speaking only from my experience, but my '05 CDI will walk all over an E500.

And it will pass it at the gas station. I'm in Richmond VA and once bought an item on eBay that was in NYC. I drove up and back on the same tank of fuel. Great ride, comfort, and cheap.
