ECU?

Good morning everyone!

Neighbor was told they have the wrong ECU in their '03 E320. The electronics, specifically CAN BUS communication with various systems is haywire. Tech wants to change the ECU out.

QUESTIONS: 1/ I Noticed that some sellers state that their ECU's are 'plug and play'. I always thought they needed to be programmed.
2/ Are ECU's specific to a model, i.e. E320, or platform specific, i.e. W211?

Help with this is appreciated...

I believe ECUs are like satellite cards in that once it is inserted into a receiver, it marries that receiver & can't be used in others. There is software that can do it called Vediamo but not easy to use so can brick your ECU if unfamiliar with how to use it properly. https://*******.com/ is where the pros hangout when it comes to this sort of thing.

Thanks. I'm not a tech so excuse my lack of applicable terminology. Symantically, satellite cards aren't MB ECUs, unless you're 100% sure the analogy applies. Regardless, if this is true, a used unit isn't advised (and I think in any case unless you're related to the seller) as it will have adopted the specific car'e profile. A new, refurbished, or aftermarket such as from https://carcomputerexchange.com/?utm...roll_15daysite accordingly will have been reset and be plug and play as touted. I'll check out the link. Good advice.
