Wheel bearing/rear end noise
Question: 2010 E 350 4Matic, with 130k. Got a high pitched humming coming from, I'm assuming the rear end/bearings. Past experience with wheel bearings tells me that's not the problem, as they usually get louder the faster you go, and loading one side or the other (cornering) usually produces changes in sound. I checked the diff and it's full. This noise is starts off as a low roar and transitions to a medium/high pitched hum. At 70 mph and above, no change in sound/pitch. Below 70 mph, the noise goes up and down with road speed. Below 15-20 mph, it's the normal MB quiet... There is no vibration, just noise. No slack/play at rear wheels. Question is if I raise the car off the ground on the suspension, and put it in drive to try to replicate the sound, would that freak out the computer?
wheel bearing
Both are easy to diagnose with extensive testing on the road. No need to put on a hoist or stands. The components need to be under load which requires on road testing.
