It was an update mid-cycle before the facelift, sometime around 05/06. I heard somewhere it was done to address customer complaints regarding the poor cupholder design in the first console (I also think the new design looks better). Cars equipped with the rear seat dvd entertainment system (Europe/Asia only?) got the old style console, due to the way the TV mounted.

My Dad owned a e270 back in the day with old style steering wheel, not facelift version (europe version), but it had the side opening center console. My 2007 e350 has a sliding door which it isn't a facelift either. I believe, it was the market determined which console you had.
