I have recently brought w211 2006, facelift model.
Great car but it has an issue with command unit. It switches on ,shows logo and then goes off.
according to the previous owner it started when he was changing the battery.
I've done a lot of research on this but it looks like none of it applies to my car.
I have checked fuses, purchased fibre optic bypass...but the issue is that there is no navigation unit at the back, this car does not have a cd changer and when I've tried to connect the bypass to the voice module, I've unscrewed that plastic lid in the bottom of the boot, but there is nothing there at all, it's completely empty
I've also bought exactly the same command unit from ebay, connected it and its exactly the same issue.
Also that little compartment just below command unit doesn't open, not sure if it is linked in anyway.

Where are you located? That's a really basic Audio 2.0 type unit. No navigation, no heated seats. A pretty basic model, hardly any like that were sold in the US. Most of the repair advice is for the full system with navigation. Probably some gateway problem. You should probably just upgrade it to some aftermarket Android unit and then get the full featured system with bluetooth, navigation, android auto/apple carplay etc.

Yeah, I thought so, but it still has a navigation button and also comes with navigation dvds. Does that mean that the navigation is built in into the actual command unit?
Also would the aftermarket unit work if the audio gateway module is faulty?
I'm not that familiar with them. There's several android units on Aliexpress that are basic replacements for the audio system so I don't think it needs to work, they're in the $200-$400 range US. I don't think navigation was part of the basic system in the US but I guess maybe they had them in the UK. In the US, they had a DVD drive in the trunk (boot) with the navigation DVD.
Wow...I had this same unit in my Benz when I purchased years ago. I remember accidently pressing a button and that door opened not knowing there was a tape deck there. I knew it was time to upgrade at that moment.
