Question Loud AC compressors?

Since the 209 forum is light on attendence and I believe the 211 and 209 500's share the same AC compressor I'd like to ask you guys if you've ever noticed a humming/buzzing sound which I've traced to the AC compressor coming from your car while pulling into your garage or other quiet location. I've also noticed after a reasonably long drive with the AC on, when pulling into my garage if I roll down the window and turn off the ac, the sound get even louder after the first few seconds the AC gets switched off then goes away.

I've had the dealer check it out and thier response was it's normal...I just don't remember hearing this on my 03 500.

Thanks for the help.

Well, its probably not the compressor itself but the air mechanics/properties of the gale force fan. It only turns on when it needs a boost, or on a hot day. Yea, its loud as hell. I and many others have asked service to fix the problem, its just the way it is.. If its the compress your youre talking about as making a noise all the time, then thats probably another issue.

I agree with Brav, it’s probably the fan. Early on I had them replace my fan and it did reduce the noise level considerably but nonetheless still there. If it’s any consolation, I currently have a 04 c-class loaner (e320 is in for minor going over) and its fan seems to sound much louder. Not only does the noise work itself into to the cabin with the windows up, but even more so causes those passing by to give you that “what the hell is going on with your car” look something I do not normally get with the e320. Before it begins, no offense to c-class owners just my opinion.

I've got the fan drone too but this is a seperate noise that occurs even with the fan(s) off or running super slow. The dealer said this sound has something to do with the compressor regulating the pressure but it's too loud and doesn't sound good at all.

Whenever you are embarrased by the radiator fan noise, you can make it stop by adjusting either the interior blower speed or temperature setting so that the words "Max Cool" turn off on the A/C display. The radiator fan seems to kick in only when in the "Max Cool" mode for a quick cool down, or for extra help on a very hot day in traffic.

Mine is this way in my E-class. With the radio off, I can faintly hear the fan noise in the cabin, and outside multiple people have told me something is wrong with my car....do people not have this reaction with your E-class, I'm wondering if yours is loud but tolerable, something is wrong with mine so it is louder than it should be.

Windows up, radio off there is absolutely no noise in the cabin. Why not bring it in and have your dealer compare your car to at least two others then you’ll know for sure.

2003 E500
On my 2003 E500 the air is quiet inside the car, but when you start the car (and have the inside temp at 72) on a warm day (80s, 90s) the exterior noise sounds like a massive jet engine or leaf blower.

A friend with a Jag and a Ferrari made me open the hood to prove I didn't have a stuck throttle :-)

It's quite the Hoover.

E500
Unfortunely there are no fix for the radiator fan noise at air cond max cool. The only solution is turn the fan speed lower to reduce the radiator fan noise. I wish MB will come out a "quite" version of radiator fan...

The engine noise on E320 is lower than E500. Strange.... The V8 on MB is just as loud as it displacements..... Unless you step up to the 600s.... It is really quiet.
