VIN Coded ECU Adaptation
Good afternoon, all.
The ECU in my 2009 W211 E350 fried itself. I purchased a remanufactured ECU coded to my VIN, but it still requires adaptation to my vehicle. I don't know if my iCarsoft MB 2.0 can do this, but nothing I've found suggests it can. I was told by the shop that tested the ECU and sold me the replacement was that I need to take it and the car to a shop with the capability to do so. So, a few of questions:
1) Can it be done at home (with or without MB 2.0)?
2) If I cannot do it at home, will the car need to be towed to a shop or will it drive (assuming the ECU was the only issue) reasonably well enough to get me to the shop when the VIN coded ECU is attached?
Thanks for your help!

Where did you get the ECU? The scanner you have is read only and can not program. The ECU is part of the anti theft system and should not be drivable unless everything is programmed exactly right. A dealer can do it for an eye popping amount of money. Some things like programming a new key can only be done by a dealer as I understand it but a good independent shop may be able to do it.

In order to install a used engine module in your car, here are the steps:
-ECM needs to be VIRGINIZED
-ECM needs to be programmed/SCN coded
-ECM needs to be PERSONALIZED/ACTIVATED
-Finally you need to perform fuel pump activation, throttle body relearn and Camshaft adaptation relearn.

The ECU came from Pressertech and, per Scott (the owner, I believe), has been coded to my specific VIN. He said that the ECU needs to learn or be "adapted" to my vehicle. I'm guessing, then, I'm at the "Personalized/Activated" stage. From all of the responses I've seen, I need to get it to a shop at this point or have a mobile mechanic come out and do the programming. Has anyone had this done or have a rough idea of the kind of costs I'm looking at?

If you find a shop that makes house calls great but not likely. My guess is around two hundred to program it. You are paying for the knowledge and skills to use an expensive and complicated Star system. Good luck.

You're spot on based on what I've found today. Although one shop did try to tell me it was a minimun 1.5 hr job @ 150/hr with a required $90 fee associated with use of the "expensive" MB equipment. I will not be using said shop...

Thank you for the input. Scott at Pressertech provided me with the procedure (which I have attached) for using a Star/Xentry system to do it. Says it takes about 2 minutes. A local (I'm in San Antonio) Benz mechanic contradicted him and provided the attached set of instructions (written on post-its - I'm high tech). I've heard of the method he advised, but only in regards to resetting adaptive driving. Is what he advised viable?
Thanks!

Contact Mack at Autohaus Mercedes behind the HEB at Austin Highway and Harry Wurzbach road. He is cheaper than the Mercedes dealer and I have been extremely pleased with the work I've allowed him to perform on my cars. His techs will go through the car with a fine tooth comb and identify any issues. If they do find something they always call first for authorization before they correct the issue if it was not explicitly in the repair order.
