So, gathered LiquiMoly differential gear oil 85W-90, a little pump, and a 14mm hex key at the end of a socket. Jacked up the rear end, set up the stands and moving blanket to ease the old bones, and crawled underneath. The 14mm fit the drain bolt, but surprise of surprises, when I went to first undo the fill plug, it turned out to be a Torx config. Why do they do this?
Can anyone say with certainty what size this Torx is?
I also understand that Torx come in flat and beveled ends. It strikes me that a flat end would also fit a beveled config. Is this so? Can anyone tell from the photo if the plug requires a beveled or flat Torx?
Both are hex.. The picture above is 100% hex and not torx/torx +..
I just did my rear diff less than a month ago. Both plugs were identical and were 14mm however the one plug was clearly tighter. To my knowledge neither were removed or serviced before.
You can buy the new hex diff plugs from fcp euro. Technically the service bulletin says to replace both. After reading multiple people on here stating you can reuse and just use loctite on the last thread, that's what I did. If both were different like your's I'd buy both knowing they are the same. Having to swap tools for the same plug would annoy me. Torx can come in a + which is more round,. My truck takes certain torx + and if you try using a normal torx bit on it you will eventually strip the fastener/bolt... I'll take a picture of them when I get home today from work.
