The question is why the refrigerant was missing. Was it addressed?
I do not buy the AC system have leaks, and it needs to be recharged now and then. My 2014 E350 is still on the original charge, and it cools as good as new. The 2012 ML350 had the recurrent "recharge about every @5 years, and I had to the work myself to diagnose the Schrader valves. Recharged and so far so good, fingers crossed
To be honest I do not know exactly the issue. I owned the car for 6 months when it happen. I check with previous owner he said that he had fixed internal AC system leakage at another workshop before. The service center I went hint if I need to fix the overall AC system it will cost quite alot (10x) the cost of just refill the refrigerant.

Understood. Now, if a mechanic gives me such an estimate w/o the proper diagnosis, I will never return to that shop. The leak can be a $10 fix plus labor, or it can cost hundreds or thousands, because they do not repair anything; they simply exchange parts. I have been diagnosed twice for a new AC compressor, E350 it was the electro-magnet, and the ML350 the same. Each quote was @$2K (AC compressor, Flush the system, Expansion valve and drier to satisfy compressor warranty requirements). Fixed both <$100 each w/o even evacuation the system. A pain to do it, yes but no need to evacuate, no need for drier, not creating vacuum, not disturbing the system.
I see both repairs as a deposit towards the next car.
