Gas Tank Recall

I filled up my 2009 E550 the other day and came home to gas smelling garage and gas smelling car. This isn't the first time its happened so I figured out there is an extended warranty on W211 Gas components. I dropped it off at my local dealer and also gave them the extended warranty on Gas Tank paperwork. They "diagnosed" the car and found nothing wrong and no smell at all. They also refused to change any gas tank components as "nothing was wrong". Upon reading other posts, some members simply told the dealership that they smelled gas, and without "diagnosing", they simply just changed all the components on the gas tank extended warranty. What were your experiences with this like? Did they charge you guys a "diagnosis fee"?

Yeah, it's not a recall, just an extended warranty. If you only smell it at fill up, you should fill up the tank before dropping it off. Everyone pretty much tells the dealer that they smell gas in the car and they go ahead and replace the gas tank. They normally remove the back seat to see gas pooling on top of the tank. It's possible it's some other problem as there's some other gas associated parts back there that aren't covered.

Drop it off with a full tank of gas. Make sure it's nice and stinky when it gets there. Or find another dealer.

I will definitely take the car after a filling up the tank, and the smell is obvious. I would not mention the extended warranty until they diagnostic says there is a problem either with the fuel tank, or the fuel pump components.

Then, ask about the extended warranty. Are you a loyal frequent customer of that dealer? If so I expect a nice treatment from the SA; otherwise, I would be a smooth as possible with the SA since he has nothing to gain from you, and a lot to justify the work. The dealer must prove beyond a doubt to MB that the issue is covered, to bill them instead of you for the repair. He works for the franchise not the brand. The SA wears two hats, and neither is to work for you, if you get what I mean.

Good luck, and hopefully you are back on the road soon
