2004 e 500 heater replacement

I have the option of getting a 2004 e 500 4 matic for 1500.

The hose that goes through the firewall seems to be disconnected. Upon further inspection it seems what it hooks onto is completely broken.

i was told it needs a heater or is that the heater core?

please help. I am almost willing to invest in the car to fix but needs opinions

The reason I asked is there's a heater control valve on the inside of the firewall just behind the engine. If it's just the valve, it's fairly easy to replace. Takes removing the wipers and cowl, etc., but if it's that, it's like a $75 part max. It's plastic where it goes through the wall, and could break. It could just be the hose connection. The heater valve connects to everything with quick connects, and might look broken where as it could be the quick connect part of the hose that broke. Again, not a big deal. If it's the actual heater core, I'm not sure, bit it might be able to be done without pulling the dash, but not sure. I'm not sure what the job entails.

If a broken heater valve should be an easy repair although most likely the plastic cowling will break when you remove it and you'll need to install a new one for approximately 80 to $100 for the part.

If a bad heater core I would pass as that requires removal of the dash.

When I did the valve on the car I use, the coweling was just fine. However every one of the push pins was wrecked getting them out. I used a forked trim removal tool to get them out.
