I currently drive an 03 E320 (W211) and I do not have navigation.

I have read varying reports about whether or not it is possible to upgrade my existing factory head unit to a command unit so that I could have the navigation system....is it possible or not? Based on what I've read; i.e. the the MB buyback back in early 03 due to the problems with retrofitting navigation it seems it is not possible...however, I've actually seen cars being sold at dealership which are 03 models that have navigation...so, as you can see I'm confused? Does it depend on the vehicle build date? If so, how can I determine the build date of my vehicle? TIA.

Not to be picky, but Steve's web site (MBenzNL) doesn't seem to have info on adding nav to a W211 that doesn't already have COMAND. Since Steve does in fact add both COMAND and nav to W211s (as I recall) it may just be a case of his web site not catching up with his actual exploits. Probably best to contact him directly for the latest. He's in California right about now, no?

To be specific in answering your question, people who ordered/prepaid for the navigation in early 03 were given vehicles without navigation. MBUSA promised to retrofit the navigation as soon as the unit was made available by their supplier. Ultimately it was found that the unit made available was incompatible with the existing wiring and MBUSA replaced these vehicles with new ones equipped with navigation. MBUSA also gave a $3250 voucher to those who were interested but did not prepay to discount the purchase of a 04. Most likely this is why see some 03s with navigation, and some without at the dealer.

MBUSA will not retrofit the COMAND unit to a 03 but as mentioned Steve can. It would be best to send him a Private Mail.

Checked out Steve's site and read the information....a couple of questions:

1) Can you let me know when you have Command available for 03 E320s (W211)?

2) I'd like to purchase from your site when available but my issue is that I'm in VA and you're in CA so there is obviously an issue if I want you to perform the install....do you know of anyone on the east coast that might be able to provide installation? Thanks.

Sorry for conveying misinformation ... Steve is based in the Netherlands but does his retrofit/upgrade magic where the cars are .... this month he had appointments in California (north and south) and I seem to recall that he planned a trip to the Right Coast later this year.

steve can retrofit command in your car along with navigation. Just e-mail him he will provide you with information.

You will need a new command (either US or European will be fine) and nav-dvd drive. That's all. If you do not want to have DVD capabilities in your car, than you can save money by asking steve to install US command (which i believe he has plenty of, since a lot of people has upgrade to euro command) instead of euro command.

Your car is upgradable. Steve is man you need to talk to.

Comand retrofits in US spec 2003 211s is no problem...
