Conductor plate or something else??

2006 E350. At a traffic light or pulling into a driveway, the car acts like it is trying to start in third or fourth gear. I have been able to get it back to normal by putting the car in park and then trying again.

I took it to the dealer, suspecting the conductor plate. He said he checked it and found no issues. Got the car back and it did it again.

What could it be besides the conductor plate? Transmission fluids and filter changes are up to date (and in fact just done last week). No codes, of course.

The car is low mileage for its age--about 80K miles.

My experience with conductor plates has been the car unexpectedly downshifting a few gears with a bang. The symptoms here are different from that. Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Other than the conductor plate (speed sensors and hydraulic valves) the main suspects are the torque converter and lockup clutch. The steering column shift module is another important piece of the system. Or console shifter, not sure what W211 uses.

TC failure often includes high frequency juddering.

TC and LUC failures are reported on this site from time to time, I would use the search feature to learn more.

Thank you for the reply. I read up on torque converters and the lockup clutch, so I now have more to talk to my service guy about. I will advise.

Which transmission do you have? The 4matic had the 5 speed transmission and the RWD was the 7 speed. The 4matic also had the transmission connector which tends to wick transmission fluid and cause weird shifts. That should be replaced if you have the 4matic. Otherwise for rwd, usually the conductor plate is the main suspect.

The car obliged by misbehaving for the mechanic, who diagnosed the issue as conductor plate. Parts replaced, and the car seems to be okay.

Thanks for all the replies.
