Depends how much you drive at night. I think they last much longer, I still have the OEM bulbs in my 2008, they're about 14 years old at this stage. I think I read somewhere that it's about 2500 hours on the bulb. Could probably get new bulbs at this stage, would probably be brighter than 14 year old bulbs.
We’re not typical at 20,000 miles/year, but I tried to factor that in. Lots of predawn and after sunset driving in that. All of the HID bulbs that failed in our 2003 turned pink (oxygen contamination) then went out completely. I changed them in pairs because the brightness difference between old & new was noticeable. I have seen comments on some HID lamps lasting 15,000 hours with 70% loss in output. Maybe the vibration from a lot of 75 MPH driving was a factor, too.
