What kind of engine and hp will E 55 have?
After being totally convinced, for no apparent reason apart from the speculations on the net, that E 55 will have the same or slightly detuned engine as SL 55, I am not sure about it any more.
I've just read a thread on W209 forum about CLK 55 and a couple of guys also disagreed that E 55 will be supercharged. Why it is thought that it won't have NA 367 hp CLK 55 engine? Really, who said, apart from the magazines which need to sell, that new E 55 will be supercharged?
Has anyone heard anything from the sources more reliable than the media?
New E is very aerodynamic and lighter than its' predecessor and with these extra 10-15 hp and maybe transmission improvements it will be slightly faster than the car it replaces, which is normal.
CL 55 and S 55 don't have the supercharger, even though they could use it even more than E, so why new E 55 has to be supercharged and MUCH faster than CLK, CL and S 55? I don't see the reason.
Just like I don't believe that new M5 will have V10 and 500 hp, I seriously doubt now that new E 55 will be something drastically faster than the W210 E 55 and W209 CLK 55.
SL 55 can be just a one-off model, a showcase for Mercedes, the pinnacle of the range and therefore has 476 hp engine.
Just to remind you, I remember how absolutely certain were all the car mags that E46 M3 will have a V8...It has the bulge in the bonnet, it is time to move on, it needs V8 to compete with Audi and MB, etc, etc. They were totally confident about it almost like up to the very unveiling of the car. Then they were also saying it will be 3.4 liters and I have no clue what they were basing their assumptions on. In the end, after all the hype, E46 M3 came out with a 6 cylinder 3.2 engine...Hence I am very sceptical now about the automotive press "predictions".
After all, it's always better to be pleasantly surprised than disappointed. Also I wouldn't base my decision to buy or not to buy new E 55 on the amount of hp it will have. 367 or 476, I don't really care, W211 is a very advanced and comfortable car as it is and with 367 hp engine it would be plenty fast for me. 1/4 in 13.5/13.0/12.5 secs I don't care either. I wouldn't go viper hunting or vette sinking in MB E class, there are other cars for that. Suppose I am in a minority here?

The reason the CLK55 will NOT have 476hp is because MB wants to keep a large gap between the CLK55 and the SL55. They don't want the cars to be alike in anyway, because if they are similar, people who were thinking about buying SL55's will go for a CLK55 to save a few bucks. They want to keep the cars completely seperate, the '03 CLK55 is more or less 90% C Class now, hehe.
I am NOT sure about the SL600 or the S55, but the MY03 S600 will infact have 476hp, this information is from my dealer.

The main reason for the E55 to have the engine from the SL55 is the competition from other car makers. Why would Mercedes want to be slower than the others?? Audi has the RS6 with 450 bhp, Jaguar has just launched the S-Type R with 400 bhp and BMW´s next M5 will have around 500 bhp, I don´t know why you don´t believe that. I also have a friend who ordered the E55 and is supposed to take delivery late this year and the dealer said it was the supercharged engine.
Rumours also say that when the CL and S-class get a facelift later this year, the CL55 och S55 will become available with the SL55-engine.

The W209 CLK55 competes directyl with the BMW M3 with 367Hp versus the M3's 333. The biggest problem with the currunt CLK versus the M3 is that the CLK55 is overpriced especially if you compare the M3 and CLK55 convertibles. Rumor has it that the M3 will soon sport a V8 engine.
