I've never heard anyone refer to a Benz as a "Merc" in my entire life. My earlier post only had to do with written text, which is constantly finding new abbreviations for long names.

You had me worried, Brian. I am sure that I have never heard anyone from California refer to a MB as a "Merck". I have never heard anyone refer to one as a "Merce" (soft "c") either. I guess the soft s sound could be used by someone, but I have never heard it.
Can't imagine why anyone would put a hard 'k" sound in Mercedes abbreviation verbally. Unless, of course, they pronounce it Merkades.

I drive a Mert say dees E320.
To repeat myself, even if some folks use Merc they are probably the same ones who wouldn't know a Beemer from a Bimmer and would brag about their Porsch.
Of course a long time ago I had a neighbor who said he had just bought a Pontiac Grand *****s

Sadly this joke really only applies to all of us that realise that 'quid' is slang termology for pound (£) i.e. five quid = £5

I've seen MB referred to as Merc before in car mags, such as Car and Driver. I always though that it was a little out of place given the confusion it could cause.
Anywho, if I say Merc, I mean Merck, as in the drug company.
