Whistling noise from A/c vents
Over the last few weeks I've noticed a whistling noise coming from the front center vents. The sound is always there when my A/c setting is on Fan speed=4 and Air flow is=Full Foward. Another thing I've noticed is that the sound is there only if the air is warm (either by using the heater or on a warm day).
I took it to the shop and they acknowledged the whistling sound. They tried to fix it but couldn't. I tried the A/c in another E that was on the showroom floor and same thing happened. So, now they say it's a design fault and they can't do anything about it.
Anyone else experienced this and have a fix??
My only fix now is to set Air Flow=Up/Down

I notice the whistling sound when one of the rear passenger compartment vents is partially closed. I suggest you make sure all the rear compartment vents are totally open; also make sure all the dasboard vents are totally open. I think that partially closing the vents when the fan is towards its max leads to the whistling sound. When all my vents are totally open, I don't hear the whistling. Hope this helps.

The noise is there even though all vents are fully open.
I don't think it's the fan cuz the noise dissapears when i change the airflow to something other than full front.
I suspect that there's air seepage from the dampers to the bottom or top vents. When you set to full front, the dampers to the bottom and top should be closed to force all the air out to the front, however the air is still seeping through one of the closed dampers, causing the whistle. This is just a suspicion though

On one of my cars the foam that is used to seal the various vent pieces together, had a gap where the ends came together. This gap allowed air to escape and thus caused a whistling noise.
I had taken the car in a few times for this problem and they never found it. I found it and corrected it with a new foam gasket.
Not sure if the W211 uses this same construction method, as I haven't had the dash apart on one recently...
