Worth upgrading E320 to 17" wheels?

I spoke with one of the dealer's take-off wheel folks about finding 17" E500 stock rims/tires for my yet-to-be delivered E320 CDI. He does the work for the MB, BMW, etc., dealers. He said that it's pretty common to find and that he takes them off new E500 cars at least once or twice a month for custom rims. We didn't start to talk price. This would work as I'd like to keep my car stock in appearance.

So, I'd like to ask the wise posters here:

1. What's a fair price for a set of new 17" 4 rims/tires?
2. Is this a worthwhile upgrade as far as handling, comfort?
3. Would I have any luck unoloading my new 16" wheels/tires?

What do custom wheel dealers usually do with these OEM takeoffs? Any idea what kind of credit they give the custom wheel buyer?

AMG 18" Type IV

I paid $3,200 for a set of AMG Type IVs with Michelin Sports. The AMGs were chromed. The tires and rims are great if you accept that they are a rough ride until they warm up.

my .02: stay away from dealer unless you want to get fleeced on the price. check the mbworld classifieds and ebay for the best deals on these kind of things, you can even post a WTB (want to buy) ad and people with an extra set will respond

I had 18" AMG IV from E55 on both E240 and E320CDI and here are my experiences...

E240:
I had to take them off cuz too much power lost (then i put them on the E320 CDI) and too much oil consumption (i only use this car in the city).

E320 CDI:
I also had them taken off the car, as you might know that diesel cars is already louder, the rims makes the motor even louder.
I was going to go for 17" but i decided to go back to stock (16"). I am now very happy with the car as its less oil consumption and less noise. I only have sport springs so the ride is very rough, but its adjustable if you have airmatik.

If you care about the look and dont care about the comfort go for 18"

I have never driven the cars with 17", so i cant really comment on that.

The answer to whatever anything is worth, just look it up.

Wonder what a 1964 Silver Quarter is worth? Look it up on EBAY.

1. I paid $1500 for a set of 17" sport (5 spoke) take-off wheel from an E500. Wheels came w/ Micheline Sport Primacy (name??)

2. To me (subjective), just the look between the ugly paralel multi-spoke 16" and the 5 spoke 17" is already worth the upgrade. Also, since 17" is a bit wider and lower profile, handling is somewhat improvied.

3. You would have a hard time offloading the 16" OEM W211 wheels. Due to lug size difference, it's not recommended to put them into older Benz model. It's best if you could find a way to trade (mostly to dealer/wheels shop). I traded in mine for $600, so I paid $900 at the end.

Another idea

I also have a 2005 E320 CDI with those same ugly 16 inch wheels. However, I must say that the ride quality is plush, better than my wife's C320 with the gorgeous 17 inch sport wheels and much better than my old E55 with 18's.

Tire Rack offers some nice 16 inch wheels which would improve the look without changing the ride quality, plus you can use the same tires and save some $.

There is only one reason to change a E320 from 16" to 17".
It is the look.

Dont buy from the dealer. Buy Mine ;-)
Seriously, I have a set of chrome E500 sport rims for sale. Great condition, just one scratch on one wheel on the lip. Probably can be buffed out, but not that bad. Tires are worn though. I can give you a good price, just let me know.

Let me know.
