cranking but not starting, no codes?
I have a 2004 W211 E320 with about 180K miles. My son was driving and the engine just died. It will crank, but it does not start, just turns over...
I believe it is the crankshaft position sensor, but I have NO CODES with generic code reader (I do have Star SDS, but I didn't have it with the car (it is parked where it died) and I really don't know that it would give me any additional info in this situation)? Do you always get a code with the crankshaft position sensor fails? I have a CPS on order, and should have it in a day or two, but I'm wondering if I have mis-diagnosed since there are no codes?
Also, the crankshaft position sensor was replaced 2 years ago with a BOSCH unit purchased on Amazon; seems odd it would fail in two years.
Here is some additional info.
- I have checked fuses and found nothing.
- I can hear fuel pump with the key on, and while I haven't checked actual fuel pressure, I am getting fuel squirting out of the fuel pressure check valve when I push in on it with a small screw driver. I don't think fuel pump is the problem.
- I disconnected a spark plug wire and plugged in a spare spark plug, grounding it, and did NOT see any spark when the engine is cranking. This is leading me me to believe I have a ignition problem.
- When cranking the engine, the RPMs on the dash stay at zero, and the "live" data on my generic ODB reader show "0" RPMs, except for once or twice for less than half a second when the engine actually seemed like it was trying to start (the RPMs needle on the dash never moved, and this only happened twice). This is leading me to believe that the crankshaft position sensor is NOT getting a reading at all, and not firing the spark plugs?
Again, seems odd that I'm not getting a code? Any advice?
Thanks
Lee

This is what it looks like with the right rear seat removed. I was thinking maybe a bad ground wire....ill continuity check the ground later on today as well. I do think its the CPS as well
