2008 E350 Fuel Pump Replacement

I was driving down the road and my 2008 E350 just died. Now it cranks but nothing it will not turn over.
first I replaced the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor. Neither helped.
I figured out it isn't get fuel. First checked all the fuses and they are fine. Checked the relay and I can hear and feel it flip when I turn the key. When I pour gas into the air intake it starts tight up and runs perfect until that gas runs out. Next I checked the fuel oressure testing valve and if I push it in no gas sprays out. I don't hear the pump start up when I turn the car on. So I figure it is the fuel pump or filter. So I thought time tonreplace the fuel pump system.
I watched numerous videos on replacing the fuel pump system. Everything I saw shows a 2 part unit under the back seat. I ordered the parts. It comes as 2 parts the pump for the right side and relay pressure return for the left side.
Here's when it gets weird. I removed the back seat and there they are. 2 metal plates. One on each side. I removed the metal plate on the left one and there is the until with 8 bolts and 2 wiring connectors. However when I removed the right hand side cover plate to my shock there is no access point. Just the smooth metal gas tank! I am so confused. Every auto parts store, amazon, various websites youtube all show this 2 part fuel pump system but obviously that is not the case. I have no clue what to do next. I can't seem to find the fuel pump to replace mine.
Has anyone else cone across this?

This place is a joke.
Steel tank means you have a PZEV vehicle. The procedure and parts is different than a standard model with the plastic tank.

How do I find the right parts? Every site I visit has the left/right side units.

The Pzev also has a 15 year 150k warranty and I think the fuel pump might be part of it. As others said, post your vin and check the in service date of your car, might still be under warranty as it's 15 years from the first in service date of the car. Otherwise if you're SOL, there's a very elaborate write up on the other forum of someone who did replace the fuel pump on their Pzev when it was out of warranty.

u have PZEV tank, no access to replacing the fuel pump. only option is buying a brand new fuel tank. if ur car is less than 150k miles or 15 yrs. warranty is still available. otherwise, it will cost an arm and a leg for the new tank. replacing fuel tank is diy-able in the garage. it's a weekend project and need to remove exhaust, parking brake wire, and drive axle. I changed mine over the weekend... my warranty was expired by 8k miles.

Nah, that's just an easy way to replace the pump. Steel tank, so you can make a hole to it and see what kind of pump there is. Just need to be very, very, very careful when opening the tank.

I just finished this job in my garage . It was a pain in the *** first time I welded it. New pump sat slightly higher becuase I did not re use old plastic housing. (I can’t got below 1/8 tank).

I burned the gas hose with my weld. Second time I JB tank welded successfully. No smells or leaks. Remove the tank for safety.

I have the part numbers for the pump it’s from an SL500 or 55 2008.

You can go the fuel trap door method but I can reacess. The fuel trap door is not a perfect access for.

FCP has PZEV fuel sender option.

Your vin will confirm 917 pzev.

I can access the left side of the fuel tank. I was able find and purchase the pzev left side fuel pump module assembly with fuel level sending unit and integrated filter. Along with the fuel tank lock ring fuel filter mount, filter tontank o-ring, seal ring for fuel pump/level sending unit and fuel filter sealing ring.
I haven't installed it yet. Does this sound like the parts I need?

You also need the right side fuel pump. Trust us it’s in there.

The fuel sender is also sometimes called a pump but it is not a true mechanical pump. It is a Fuel Sender that works with a Venturi principle. Also has a gas pressure regulator.

The pump model number I attached for the SL is the best fit. 98% identical. You can check the 16 page write up for all the details and parts numbers . My post is the spark notes version.

So basically I am screwed without replacing the tank? I have heard it is still under warranty but that it is difficult to get a dealership to agree and the maintenance/repair department at the dealership here in Portland, OR are absolutely the worst customer service of any Mercedes dealer in the country.

There's a long thread in another forum that mentions replacing the fuel pump on a Pzev. Looks like your car was made on 11/2007 so they go by the in service date of vehicle for the 15 year/150k warranty. You could call MB USA if it's still under warranty and you get a hard time from the dealer. Lots of times they don't want to cover it until you get corporate involved. In the other thread, the guy cut an access hatch into the tank and then got a patch to cover up the hole. Cheaper than a replacement tank but was quite involved. Hope you get warranty coverage.
