How to remove cigarette lighter cover?

Have an 05 that came with no ashtray and no lighter. Does anyone know how to remove the "12 V" cover?

BTW, the rear middle isn't supposed to have an ashtray or lighter, is it? Just that silly cover again?

You have a rubber mat and ashtray in the front? I didn't think the ashtray would fit if the rubber mat was in... Did you not get a cigarette lighter cover?

Ah, okay. Makes sense.

My original question remains, however. Anyone know how to remove the cover? It doesn't seem like it just pops right off...

Pretty sure it just pops right off.

You can remove the whole works to get a better look at it, if you're so inclined.

Did you ever figure this out? I just picked up my car and it has the ashtray and lighter. I've ordered the mat and would like to fit the 12v cover in place of the lighter but I'm not sure if this is a seperate piece that can be retrofitted. Any ideas?

I have a March 2004 build E320. It came with no mat. Anybody know when they deleted it or did someone just steal it?

The cover fits onto a socket; the lighter is a different item. You can't fit the cover onto the lighter. You need to replace the lighter with the complete socket (sometimes they fit in the same hole, sometime they require different holes). The lighter has illumination; the socket does not.

Thanks. That makes sense. I'll make a trip to the dealer and see if I can sort out the necessary parts in their Illustrated Parts Catalog.

My car came with the mat just loose in the glove compartment. At the time, the dealer didn't know what the mat was for, and I am lucky that I didn't throw it away. Fortunately I found out by reading here that I could remove the ashtray and put the mat in that compartment. I keep parking meter change and small bills in there. It's really handy and the change doesn't roll around. The ashtray popped out easily.

I took apart the ashtray compartment today, but I still can't figure out how to get the cover off.

2005 E320 4Matic
Hello Incendiary: I ordered and received my 2005 E320 4Matic (like yours) in July 2004 and November 2004, respectively. I was able to remove my ashtray quite easily by (1) pushing the "stopper" in the direction of the printed arrow and (2) then popping it out. Due to poor ergonomics, however, the ashtray can be removed only when the shiftnob is in the drive position. Why are you interested in removing the wood cover?

BTW, the color of my wood steering wheel (darker burl walnut ) does not match the color of wood elsewhere (lighter burl walnut). Is this true for everyone?

Oh, I meant the cover on the lighter socket. I got the non-smoker's package.

Well, I went to the dealer and tried to find the part number for the socket with the cover but couldn't find it. Oddly enough, they had a car in the showroom with the 12 volt outlet that we could see, and there are three 12 volt outlets with covers in the car: ashtray, rear center console and trunk. All three are different sockets and covers. No wonder these cars cost so much. We were able to identify the center console and trunk units but the ashtry one is not listed in the expolded parts view. The dealer says that the parts data is only updated every three months and even then lags a bit behind. He was hopeful that the part will show up in the next revision of the parts book. Meanwhile, if anyone knows the part number.....or wants to trade their 12 volt socket for the cigarette lighter...let me know.
